Grade: 1 / Unit: Social skills and problem solving; October
Unit Overview: Students will learn social skills to help them problem solve on their own peer related issues and know when it is important to get assistance from an adult. Students will learn it is only appropriate to interrupt others when their is an emergency and to use problem solving skills when possible instead of interrupting. Students will discuss and be able to apply prosocial skills to build and maintain friendships.
Learning Targets:
●  Students will know the difference between tattling and reporting
●  Students will understand when it is important to interrupt and when it is not
●  Students will understand and apply prosocial skills to build and maintain friendships with their peers / Essential Questions:
●  What does the word tattling mean? A: instead of solving a kid sized problem on your own you tell an adult.
●  Give an example of when you need to report something to an adult. A: Injured badly
●  When is it important to interrupt? A; injured badly, going to be sick, someone is in danger, etc.
●  What are qualities people want in a friend? A: kind, helpful, friendly, take turns, etc.

G.4.2.2 / Don’t Squeal Unless It’s A Big Deal / We will listen to and discuss the story Don’t Squeal Unless It’s A Big Deal. Students will then do a large group activity distinguishing tattling and reporting situations.

D.4.2.5 / My Mouth Is A Volcano / Students will each be given 3 clothespins to place on their shirt; they are to leave the clothespins alone. They will be informed anytime they interrupt by making noises, with words, or playing with the clothespins a clothespin will be taken away. The goal is to have all 3 clothespins still on their shirt at the end of class. We will read and discuss My Mouth Is A Volcano and then complete “My Mouth Is A Volcano” worksheet

G.4.1.1 / What’s The Recipe For Friends? / Students will listen to and discuss the book What’s The Recipe For Friends? We will talk about ingredients we want in friends and those that would spoil the recipe. After the story we will sit in a circle with one koosh ball. Students will give one another compliments about what makes someone a good friend, i.e. Dawson is a good friend because he shares with me.

G.4.2.1 / Making Friends is an Art / We will read and discuss the book Making Friends is an Art. Students will talk about what they can do to make and keep friends. Students will design their own friendship crown.
Prior to Unit (What prior knowledge do students need?):
An understanding of tattling and reporting being different from one another. / After Unit (assessments, connections to upcoming units):
Throughout the school year students will be reminded of when to get help from an adult and when to problem solve on their own. If interruptions in Guidance become an issue I will bring the clothespins with me to that particular class as a reminder to wait and not interrupt.
Materials:
●  Lesson 1-Book Don’t Squeal Unless It’s A Big Deal and “Pin the face on the tattletale” game
●  Lesson 2-My Mouth Is A Volcano, “My Mouth is a Volcano” worksheet, and 3 clothespins for each student
●  Lesson 3-Book What’s The Recipe For Friends? And koosh ball or similar fidget
●  Lesson 4-Book Making Friends is an Art and “friendship crown”
