Spacing & Language Rules:
- Do not space after a . (period) within abbreviations. Example: a.m.
- Space once after a . (period) following abbreviations and initials. Example: J. R. Smith
- Space twice after a . (period) at the end of a sentence.
- Do not space after an internal period in an abbreviation, such as Ed.D.
- Space once after a , (comma) used as punctuation.
- Space once after a ; (semicolon).
- Space twice after a : (colon) used as punctuation.
- Capitalize the first word of a complete sentence following a colon.
- Do not capitalize a sentence fragment following a colon.
- Space twice after a ? (question mark) or an ! (exclamation point) at the end of a sentence.
- Do not space before or after a diagonal. Example: Only 2/3 of the class attended the meeting.
- Do not space before or after a hyphen if a word is hyphenated. Example: Sally likes to send e-mail messages to her friends.
- Do not space before or after quotation marks and the word it encloses. Example: “less than” sign
- Do not space before or after an aspostrophe used in a contraction. Example: don’t
- If a colon is used to show time, do not space before or after the colon. Example: 9:30
- Do not use a space after a left parenthesis and the next character. Example: (2)
- Do not use a space before a right parenthesis. Example: see example above
SS—single space (there will be no blank lines between lines of text)
DS—double space (there will be one blank line between lines of text)
QS—quad space (there will be three blank lines between lines of text)
LM—left margin
RM—right margin
TM—top margin
