Call for Contributors: Issues in Disaster Science and Management: A Critical Dialogue

Edited by: Dr. Joseph E Trainor, PhD and Mr. Tony Subbio, CEM, MS

Introduction

For decades, the emergency management community has discussed the gap between practitioners (i.e., those directly responsible for implementing emergency management programs at the federal-, state-, regional-, local-, or facility-level) and scientists (i.e. those that focus on studying disasters and emergency management.) This FEMA in Higher Education funded project was designed with that divide in mind. Our goal is to develop a textbook for use in advanced undergraduate and introductory graduate courses that will focus the attention of academic/practitioner teams on critical contemporary issues related to disasters.

For each issue, academics and practitioners will be selected to describe what we “know.” Researchers will be asked to focus on the scientific findings and practitioners will be asked to discuss patterns and variation in national policies/state of practice. The focus of the project will be on facilitating an exchange of ideas between these communities and developing a vision for how their insights could be brought together to make emergency management systems better.

Request

We are currently searching for individuals and/or practitioner/academic teams that are interested in contributing to this textbook for a number of pre-identified topic areas. We are currently looking for authors to address the following issues (in no particular order):

2.  Resilience

3.  Integration of Persons with Access and Functional Needs

4.  Inequity and Emergency Management

5.  Evaluating and Acting on Risks

6.  Mitigation Measures

7.  Individual Preparedness

8.  Insights on the Whole Community Approach

9.  Private Sector Integration

10.  The Creation and Maintenance of Plans and Policies

11.  Planning and Improvisation During Disasters

You will note that this list reflects a diverse set of topics. As such, we welcome suggestions from interested authors on how they would approach writing about these areas. We are also open to contributors proposing topics they believe would fit in such a volume.

Compensation

Each contributor will receive a $500 honorarium for their efforts.

Interested in contributing?

Send an e-mail to either of the volume editors: Dr. Joseph E. Trainor, PhD or to Tony Subbio, CEM, MS, for additional details.

v  American Journal of Disaster Medicine

What exactly is disaster medicine?

Even to practitioners, the discipline's definition can be fuzzy and somewhat confusing. If it appeared in dictionaries (which it doesn't yet), it would look like this:

dis.as.ter med.i.cine (di zas' tor med'i sin) n 1. the study and collaborative application of the professional skills of diverse medical and public health specialties to provide "crisis management" (altered standards of care) in mass casualty incidents 2. not the same as conventional medical care 3. requires a fundamental change in the approach to the care of patients in order to achieve the objective of providing the "greatest good for the greatest number of patients 4. requires knowledge of the fundamentals of disaster management, specific injury patterns commonly encountered in disasters and the ability to work as part of a multi-organizational response team

Independent and strictly peer-reviewed, guided by a internationally recognized editorial review board and accepted for inclusion in the National Library of Medicine's prestigious PUBMED database, American Journal of Disaster Medicine is designed for those of us who will find ourselves on the frontlines of a major disaster. It offers practical, real time guidance as we seek to combine emergency medical and trauma skills with crisis management and new forms of triage in the effort to save lives.
