YBIKE PROGRAM COUNSELORS
POSITION SUMMARY
Under the supervision of the YBike Coordinator, this position is responsible for working the full variety of bicycle programs the YBike Program offers to Y Camp participants, including leading both safety and riding classes; helping with YBike operations including bike maintenance and ensuring the safety and cleanliness of the bike room.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Essential Functions may include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Must be able to attend YMCA Association and branch camp trainings.
- Ability to ride a bike
- Physical ability to lead and participate in activeYBike sports and games with children
- Monitor behavior requiring physical strength, and assist with management and transport of equipment
- Ability to adequately observe participants in YBike activities, enforce safety regulations, and apply appropriate management techniques
- Visual and auditory ability to respond to critical incidents and the physical ability to act swiftly in an emergency situation.
- Some bike mechanics experience is preferred, but not necessary.
- Provide a safe and healthy environment, both physically and mentally, to ensure the operation of a quality YBike program.
- Ensures children are aware of rules, and daily scheduled routines
- Assist in the planning and implementing of the daily activities that fit the children’s needs and interests.
- Takes responsibilityfor the quality of the supplies, equipment and materials
- Report all suspicions of child abuse to proper authorities.
- Make sure proper procedures are followed for sign-in/out of children on a daily basis.
- Reports all accidents to the Supervisor, and completely fills out proper health log and/or accident/incident form
- Ensure that YMCA Character Traits are evident in all activities.
- Establish a relationship with each child and know his or her present level of understanding; consider the needs of all the children and treat each child with respect and dignity.
- Work toward positive parent/staff relations.
- Completes all paperwork clearly and concisely.
- Remains up to date on emergency procedures and family center policies.
- Participates in member retention, special events and fundraising.
- Participate in YMCA fundraising events.
- All other duties assigned by Management
QUALIFICATIONS:
- 18 years of age and older
- CPR and First Aid certifications required.
- Thorough understanding of the needs and concerns of cyclists.
- Child care experience is a definite plus
- To be successful, you must meet some education, training and experience requirements and you must be able to demonstrate some critical knowledge, skills, and physical abilities.
- Must have excellent leadership skills
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
- Desire and ability to work with children of all ages
- Demonstrated responsibility and dependability
- Follow through actions regarding communication with all parents
- May be required to lift and carry up to 50 lbs. in various forms.
- May be required to sit, stand, or maintain physical activity for extended periods of time.
- Must exhibit patience and understanding.
- Receives and follows detailed instructions. Must be alert at all times, keeping safety in mind.
- Must possess acceptable hearing and visual capabilities in order to monitor environment and children’s well-being.
- Must be capable of working under pressure in a somewhat disruptive environment
- Ability to work 10-15 hours weekly
