GENERAL DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE PROJECTS AND SITES

SUBA: The location of this camp is just right in front of a mangrove forest, which is also home to migratory birds flying the Austral-Asia Migratory Flyway.

SUDLON: Located within the watershed, source of Cebu’s fresh water supply, the campsite is perched on a mountaintop with a sweeping view of the valley below.

BANTAYAN: The basecamp is located within one of Cebu’s prime beach destinations, which is also widely known for seafood and a superbly planned mangrove forest plantation.

In the tree camping site, the volunteers will stay in a government building overlooking the mountains and watershed area. During mangrove planting, they will stay in a beach house just in front of the mangrove forest.

Objectives of camp: Mangroves are homes of fishes but can be cut too to make homes for people. Unfortunately, the widespread and mindless cutting of these important marine fish sanctuaries is threatening the ecological balance in Olango. The volunteers can help by planting mangroves in vacant areas. On the other hand, Barangay Sudlon is mountainous which is the source of Cebu’s drinking water supply. Planting trees is a needed and sustainable activity to protect and preserve the watershed.

Work: The volunteers will gather mangrove shoots and plant them in especially designated areas to reclaim and expand the fish’ territorial home. They will likewise plant trees along the roads and public gardens and make tree guards for every tree planted. The volunteers will likewise meet with the locals, interact with childrenand a religious group living in a cave. The volunteers will also have a sports festival with students of schools and learn native games and a little cultural program with the local people.

Location: Cebu is known for its white sandy beaches and spectacular dive sites. The camp locations are within a few hours from MactanInternationalAirport. Traveling to and from the camp sites will be done by boat, bus, motorbike and the ubiquitous jeepney. Catching crabs and night sea-swimming are favorite pastimes of the volunteers.

Nearest airport: MactanInternationalAirport

Meeting point is at the Mactan Shrine. It is a public park dedicated to the great battle of Mactan where the navigator Ferdinand Magellan fell in the hands of the local hero Lapu-Lapu. At 3:00 o’clock PM on the first day of camp, the volunteers will meet here and come together to basecamp.

Accommodation: Government building and beach house

Language: English

Special remarks: For added protection while working in the mangrove forest, it is recommended for the volunteers to bring aqua shoes. Seashells and mangrove roots can hurt your foot.
