TL3-1 Centura Health Strategic Plan Overview

It’s time to believe!

by Gary Campbell, Centura Health president and CEO
Everyone who has accomplished something great, started with the belief that what they were dreaming could come true. Abraham Lincoln believed with all his might that there was a way to bring a divided country together; Martin Luther King, Jr. believed, beyond the shadow of a doubt, that it was possible to stop violence with peace; and Mother Teresa believed, down deep in her heart, that she could make a difference by demonstrating kindness and compassion to a few precious souls whom most had rejected. All of these great leaders had plenty of opposition from those who didn’t believe, but they kept on, and their beliefs ended up changing the lives of millions.

Now is the time for us to believe. It’s time to believe in the collective power of nearly 14,000 individuals aligned toward a single purpose, to believe that everyone plays a role in our plan for the future, and to believe that we can accomplish great things on behalf of the people of Colorado. Centura Health 2020, the strategic plan for fulfilling our dreams, will succeed because it was developed by people throughout the Centura Health family, and has a role for everyone. We know from our extensive research, that a majority of associates believe our plan charts the course to deliver the best possible health care in Colorado, and that it is a plan that we can all rally around during the next decade.

Champions on the loose

This past week, nearly 100 Centura Health 2020 Champions were trained and turned loose in facilities around the state to help us all understand more about the Centura Health 2020 strategic plan; more will be trained next week. Your entity Champions will be connecting with you in small groups and one-on-one conversations. They’ll be placing posters, flyers and tent cards around your facilities and offices to help us all understand that we have an exciting future as an organization and that we each have a role to play.

Don’t worry; you’ll know who they are. Please listen to what they have to say and look for ways you can play a part in Centura Health 2020. Like the development of our strategic plan, the communication of our plan is a collaborative, grass-roots, two-way process. Let your Champions know how you believe we can be better and what inspires you. They have the full support and listening ears of Centura Health leaders, and will deliver your messages to help us fulfill our mission successfully.

2020 Believe

The theme for the communication of our strategic plan is 2020 Believe. It’s inspiring, straightforward and visually arresting. We chose to take a rare step out of our Centura Health visual graphic standards for a very specific reason; to stop us in our tracks, and to remind us of the Centura Health 2020 plan, and its goal of extending the healing ministry of Christ during the next ten years. It’s designed to help us remember the most important job of all: fulfilling our mission.

While we have much work ahead to become the most trusted and widely-respected health care network we can be, there are things you and I can believe in right now:

  • We believe in the best care for our patients
  • We believe that we are all a part of the team
  • We believe we are all empowered to contribute to positive change
  • We believe that our systems of care make Centura Health different and better.
  • We believe that we will deliver the future of health care to Colorado
  • We believe that the healing ministry of Christ is one that heals body, mind and spirit.

If we are to fulfill our mission, we must believe we can accomplish these things and more. Even where there is evidence to suggest the opposite, even when we face those who would distract or discourage us, we must keep on. Our dreams will change the lives of millions.

What do you see around you that causes you to believe that Centura Health can extend the healing ministry of Christ in new and imaginative ways? What inspires your commitment to our mission? What dreams for our future do you have? Please send your stories and examples to , and thank you for believing!

MOVING UPSTREAM

  • We BELIEVE in shifting emphasis from curing sickness to promoting wellness.
  • We BELIEVE that we can help change how people think about caring for their health.
  • We BELIEVE in primary care and extending care to people outside our communities.

There is nothing more compassionate, more effective, and more rewarding than to be part of a team that promotes wellness rather than just treats illness. Through education and support, we can help change the way people think about health care and lead the way to a more wellness oriented mind-set. Centura Health 2020 will provide the resources that will allow us to focus on improving the health of the communities we serve.

“Moving Upstream” means helping our patients and residents learn to make smarter choices about their health, by promoting wellness and preventative care, and providing the education and support they need to think differently about health care. To reach rural communities with access to care and preventative upstream support, we will use technology to extend care to rural communities. Just this year, Centura Health partnered to provide telemedicine outreach to four outlying counties in Colorado. By 2020, we plan to be our region’s rural health outreach leader, delivering high quality and cost-effective health care to our rural communities. Here are some reasons why rural health care is increasingly important:

  • Colorado is a rural state: 73 percent (47 of 64) of our counties are rural, and 20 percent of the population resides in rural areas.
  • However, 98 percent of rural counties have health professional shortages; and the people residing in those areas are less likely to receive prenatal care and are twice as likely to die in a motor vehicle accident.

We also believe that the primary care physician is the “team leader” when it comes to delivering health care. We will work with our physicians to look at health care from the patient’s perspective—listening, understanding and anticipating needs and then delivering on them. This integrated approach is the way of the future, and supporting physicians in providing the best possible care is how Centura Health will do business and deliver upstream care.

STRENGTHENING THE FOUNDATION

  • We BELIEVE that patient safety and service come first.
  • We BELIEVE in the power of associates and physicians working together as a team.
  • We BELIEVE in listening to our patients and residents, understanding their needs and delivering on them.
  • We BELIEVE that health care transformation must be accompanied by responsible stewardship of the vast physical, financial and human resources that comprise Centura Health.

No one will argue that patients and residents are at the heart of all that we do. No matter what our role in the organization, there is simply no more important part of our jobs. From small, day-to-day actions to the way we collaborate as a team, this commitment to safety and service is more than just good health care; it is a natural expression of the compassion and caring that is central to our organization. Centura Health 2020 empowers each of us to continually ask: “How can I make a difference in improving the care we provide?”

“Strengthening the Foundation” also means providing our associates and physicians with the proper tools to reach their full potential and care for our patients. Those tools include the use of advanced medical technology, tapping into the largest network of support in the state and further defining and developing specialized service lines throughout the system that our patients and associates can utilize at any time.

While we have always looked to life-enhancing and life-saving technology to improve the care we provide, over the next few years, we will focus on providing the latest in certified electronic health record (EHR) technologies to improve the quality and coordination of care and reduce medical errors. In addition, we will continue to fund technology improvements to strengthen our operating performance. Each and every one of us must be on the look out for best practices and efficiencies that will help us to be leaner and stronger so we can continue to invest in the tools and technologies.

CREATING SYSTEMS OF CARE

  • We BELIEVE in sharing best practices and using best evidence.
  • We BELIEVE that there is strength in our system.
  • We BELIEVE it is our responsibility to provide excellent health care and look for ways to be more efficient.

The most important asset that we have to share across our organization is YOUR excellence. Centura Health attracts the best, most talented and dedicated professionals in the business. If we can identify and harness your best practices—the things you and your fellow associates do every day that help bring down costs while improving care—it will help us deliver affordable, accessible, quality health care in every facility and across every service and program. Centura Health 2020 will align us operationally to evolve from centers of care to a complete system of care.

We serve more communities and people in Colorado than any other health care provider, but in order to truly unlock the power of our system we must begin to view ourselves less as individual facilities and more as a network of care that works together. We will look to each facility and entity, tapping their best practices to improve our overall efficiency and communication. This unifying effort will make us a leader in fixing the fragmented health care model that is now prevalent across the country.

We strongly believe it is our responsibility to create systems of care that seamlessly connect our shared resources to help us do what we do best—care for our communities. Patients who look to their local hospital for care will know that they can access the entire Centura Health system when they need it. We believe it is our responsibility to create care delivery processes that are seamless to our patients. We will focus our initial efforts on three key service lines, and by 2020, Centura Health will be the statewide leader in:

  • Trauma services
  • Cardiovascular care
  • Neurosciences (stroke and spine)
