Executive Vice President, Chief Academic Officer

WalshCollege invites expressions of interest in, and nominations for, the position of Executive Vice President, Chief Academic Officer. The College seeks a dynamic and accomplished individual who has strong academic credentials, demonstrated skills as an administrator, teacher and collaborator, and the ability to build both internal and external relationships.

Founded in 1922, Walsh College of Accountancy and Business Administration is a

non-profit, private and independent institution with three locations in Michigan: Troy, Novi and ClintonTownship. The mission of Walsh is to provide a quality, practical education in business and related technology that enables students to become successful professionals and leaders. Programs have an appropriate balance of practical and theoretical education and are taught by full-time and adjunct faculty who possess extensive experience in their fields and strong academic credentials.

The College offers upper division (junior and senior level undergraduate only) and graduate degrees in a broad range of business and technology related disciplines. Programs include three undergraduate degrees (Bachelor of Accountancy, Bachelor of Business Administration, and Bachelor of Science in Information Technology), a Master of Business Administration degree,seven specialized Master of Science degrees,and a new Doctor of Management in Executive Leadership degree. In addition to traditional delivery of courses, Walsh offers about 40 percent of its sections online. Online learning is a major strategic initiative of the institution. Walsh is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools. It is also a candidate for accredititation by the International Assembly for Collegiate Business Education.

Walsh has over 4,500 commuter students taking courses during an academic year, 65 percent of whom are pursuing graduate degrees. The staff and faculty provide convenient, personal service to students and clients in a professional learning environment. The majority of students are working adults, pursuing their degrees on a part-time basis. Most academic programs are offered in the evenings and on Saturdays. There is a small population of international students representing about 60 countries.

WalshCollege is well-known for its responsiveness to the needs of students and the business community. For over 25 years Walsh has cultivated strong partnerships with area community colleges from which most of its undergraduatestudents are drawn. It has articulation agreements with ten community colleges. In addition, theHonors Fast Track Program gives students the ability to complete three degrees in five years through a special agreement with area community colleges.

Other affiliations and partnerships include:

  • Designation as a “Center of Academic Excellence” for information assurance (security) education by the U.S. National Security Agency.
  • Partnership agreement with China’s Southwestern University of Finance and Economics for the purpose of student, faculty, and business executive exchange.
  • Approval to prepare individuals for the Certified Financial Planner and Certified Treasury Professional designations.
  • The Adams Entrepreneurial Fellowship is a grant-funded program to develop entrepreneurial skills of promising business students. Selected fellows are matched with CEOs and decision makers from entrepreneurial companies.
  • The Michigan Bankers Association selected WalshCollege as its premier educational partner to provide bachelor degree preparation for banking professionals.
  • The Michigan Council on Economic Education has designated Walsh as a Center of Economic Education.
  • Membership in the Servicemembers Opportunity Colleges, a consortium of over 1,800 colleges and universities that provide college-level educational opportunities for servicemembers and their families.

The College enjoys a strong reputation in southeastern Michigan. It is one of the top producers of business degree graduates in the state. According to student surveys, 95 percent of students would recommend Walsh to a friend. Satisfaction with instructional quality is high according to student feedback surveys. Alumni are successful in seeking employment in their fields upon graduation and hold key positions in the business community. Walsh students have shown excellent performance on the CPA and CMA examinations, garnering both national and state awards. It has also earned a “Cool Places to Work” award by Crain’s Detroit Business.

The Walsh Board of Trustees is comprised of prominent men and women representing various business fields. Trustees are interested in the College, support the President and focus their responsibilities on governance and financial stewardship at the policy level. The President’s Advisory Council, consisting of about 100 business and community leaders, advises the College on various initiatives. External Program Advisory Groups provide feedback and advice on academic initiatives.

The College values strong fiscal management and emulates applicable business practices. It is in good financial condition and has always attained a breakeven or surplus budget. Annual operating revenue totals approximately $25 million.

About the Location

Rich in natural resources with a balance of urban and rural environments, OaklandCountyisa beautiful backdrop for modern lifestyle conveniences. The County has more natural lakes than any other state county, about 90,000 acres of parks, three major downhill ski sites, and two water parks. In addition to several elite private country clubs, OaklandCounty is home to over 60 public golf courses.

Events and destinations include jazz and art festivals, the Woodward Dream Cruise, the DTE Music Theatre, the Detroit Zoo, and Cranbrook Institute of Science and Art Museum. An extensive collection of malls and marketplaces ranging from small village malls to popular local downtown shopping districts with upscale restaurantsmeet a wide range of tastes and budgets. The Position

Reporting to the President and Chief Executive Officer, the EVP,Chief Academic Officer provides strategic vision and direction for the academic and library functions as well as the Business Leadership Institute. Specific responsibilities are to:

  • ensure the College maintains high academic standards and meets accreditation requirements;
  • oversee academic program reviews, student outcomes assessment, tutoring and remedial programs;
  • coordinate development and implementation of new academic programs;
  • develop and interpret academic policies;
  • work with the Academic Committee Board Chair to coordinateCommittee activities;
  • as a part of the executive management team, play a key role in strategic planning, policy decisions and workflow coordination;
  • as part of a team, develop, implement, and achieve College plans and budgets, including enrollment targets;
  • establish and maintain alliances with corporations, educational institutions and other entities; and
  • represent the College to various constituencies including students, professional organizations, employers, donors, alumni and community college personnel.

Qualifications

  • Earned doctorate degree is required. Candidates with at least one degree in a business discipline and/or significant private sector business experience are preferred.
  • Minimum of ten years of overall teaching and administrative experience.
  • A proven leader who possesses the demeanor, credentials and vision required to earn the respect of others and represent the College.
  • Possesses the presence, intelligence, and communication skills to effectively implement the College’s mission and vision.
  • Experience in managing significant number of staff and budgets, and in setting strategic direction of large division or organization.
  • Demonstrated success in curriculum/program design, development, and implementation.
  • Knowledge of contemporary instructional methods and technology for adult learners.
  • Proactive, self-starter capable of managing time and priorities effectively while accomplishing planned objectives.
  • Accreditation and self-study experience preferred.
  • Demonstrated scholarship a plus.
  • Willingness to commit to the mission of WalshCollege.
