The meeting was called to order in the lower level meeting room of the SASCU Community Center by President Peter Molnar at 7:04 pm. Agenda moved to be adopted by Peter seconded by Tina Letham. Carried
Marcia Beckner stood and paid tribute to members who have died since last season: Kurt Otterstrom, Erkki-Keski Salmi and John Coffey.
Minutes of the March 8th, 2011 Annual General Meeting were not available to be read by secretary Val Heckrodt. With apologies, please refer to the website where the minutes are displayed.
Business arising: Deferred to next meeting because minutes were not available.
Treasurer’s Report: Presented by Allan Bahan. Acceptance moved by Alan and 2nded by Clint Smith. Carried
Membership report: Jan Naylor reported 383 members. 76 jack rabbits. 70 on ski team $2-3 of each membership goes to Zone 4.
Committee Reports:
Track setting – Blaine Carson reported Clint Smith is recording information about all trails in the Shuswap drainage area. Dave Brubeck spoke about the tracksetting machinery and stated that it is in pretty good shape. There was a round of applause for Dave.
Trails/Joint Trails Committee – Blaine spoke about various interested parties that have to be kept informed about new trails. Tolko is logging between Larch Hills Loop and Baby Moon Walk, which will provide a new trackset trail with beautiful views. Clint Smith moved that this trail be expanded and trackset on a trial basis. 2nded by Blaine. Carried. Blaine added that150 people worked on Take Back the Hills-the largest turnout ever. Blaine also spoke about the need for stiles to keep motorized vehicles off sensitive areas. Contact Blaine if you would be willing to help with this.
Trail Use – Anne Nikmo spoke about the variety of users and their impact on wildlife. Winter is harder on animals and this should be considered when we think about expanding ski trail use.
Purchase of Saws – George Zorn has suggested purchasing light Japanese 21 foot pole saws for trail clearance. Referred to next executive meeting.
Chalet – Jim Beckner spoke about the refurbishing that was done to the logs of the chalet
Gate by Pat Hutchins, Peter and Jim. A fence has been put on the roof of the wood shelter behind the chalet to prevent access by anyone.Sliding trail in the back has been made safer with a fence. A permanent light pole has been put up in the start area. Jim is checking into upgrading our wood stove to bring it up to standard for insurance purposes. Mick Ford organized a work party to restock the firewood. We have a good supply of wood for the winter now.
Snow Shoe – Clint Smith reported walking the trails with the geysers. Blaine gave John Coffey credit for putting in the majority of the snowshoe trails.
Visioning – Peter spoke about this being a process that needs to be ongoing. Referred to executive.
Canine Trail – A proposal to extend was presented by Anne Lockington with help from Allan Bayan. Anne has received feedback that the present trail isn’t long enough and there is a preference for a loop trail. A six page handout explained the three options the committee has for extending the Canine Trail. Discussion concerned impact on wildlife, safety and liability with regard to steepness and sharp turns. Jim Beckner moved that the proposals go back to the executive. 2nded by John Henderson. Carried
Safety Committee – Jim Ellis is presently working on this. Anyone interested please contact Jim.
Programs
Jackrabbits – Suzy Beckner reported that 76 jackrabbits have signed up and that there are enough qualified leaders at present for this number.
Junior Ski Team – Abbi reported there are 70 racers and 9 coaches. Nov. 30th and Dec. 1st is a team training weekend at Silver Star.
Challenge Group – Trish Wallensteen has taken this back from Lorne Hunter.
Trail Host Program – John Henderson will organize this from Dec 22nd to Dec. 31st
Events –
Santa Cruise – Dec. 9th
Lantern Ski – Dec. 27th no host pot luck
Fun Race/Teck Okanagan Cup – Dec. 30th at 11am
Reino Keski Salmi Loppet – Jan 19, 2013
Pirate Loppet will happen the week after the RKS Jan. 25 and be coordinated by George Zorn because Brian Smith recently had open heart surgery.
Letter from Judy Murray – Peter suggested this go back to the executive for
consideration.
Governance – Peter would like to have a committee set up to look at process, policy and procedures.
