11th GRADE PREPARATION AND SAMPLE QUESTIONS:

1. Pay attention to verb tense (past, present, and future).

2. Pay attention to additional, unnecessary words in sentences.

3. Pay attention to wordy sentences (too many words used as opposed to concise sentences).

4. Choose active sentences over passive sentences. For example: The paper was written by Ms. Conn (passive sentence). Ms. Conn wrote the paper (active sentence).

5. Make sure that every sentence has a subject and verb.

6. Remove phrases between commas to determine if the sentence makes sense. For example: President Obama, who was recently reelected to the presidency, he received more electoral college votes than expected.

7. Be aware of dependent clauses modifying/describing independent clauses. For example: Raised in Florida, Ms. Conn likes to share that she’s happy to live in New York (correct). Raised in Florida, Ms. Conn’s classes know that she’s happy to live in New York (incorrect).

8. Remember that the following always stay together in sentences: “not only” and “but also”, “either” and “or”, and “neither” and “nor.”

9. Know the difference between objects and subjects of sentences. For example:

Information Technology High School is happy to announce that Kanye West and Kim Kardashian will be performing at the winter concert, especially since he and Kim are highly recognized (correct). Information Technology High School is happy to announce that Kanye West and Kim Kardashian will be performing at the winter concert, especially since him and Kim are highly recognized (incorrect).

10. Be aware of subject-verb agreement. For example: When ITHS students study, participate in extracurricular activities and improve their technological skills, it proves they’re ready for college (incorrect). When ITHS students study, participate in extracurricular activities and improve their technological skills, they prove they’re ready for college (correct).
