The Life of Deng Xiaoping

This site lists the chronology of Deng Xiaoping's life, from birth to death. The aim was to list clearly the events of his life and expand on the major ones. I have particularly focused on his political life which, as the leader of China, had such an impact on hundreds of Chinese lives.

The links to other key people or institutions on the web have been referenced both in the text and at the end of the page.

Some personal information about me is included at the end.

Web searches

Initially I started looking around the web for pages generally on China using Yahoo. Many of the pages found were business and government administration sites. I then changed to searching on Alta Vista and found many more relevant sites. To narrow the search I chose to look at the leaders of the last century - Sun Yat-Sen, Mao Zedong and Deng Xiaoping.

Few references were made to Sun Yat-Sen and those web sites that did provided little factual information. Many sites were found for Mao Zedong, including his life chronology and several open forum sites of the public’s opinions. Very few sites were dedicated to Deng Xiaoping, although a forum site was found. A significant hindrance to many of the web sites found was the language barrier - many were written in Chinese and so not accessible to much of the Western world. Therefore I decided to add to the information on the web by building a factual site of his life history.

Several photographs and pictures were readily available from the Web, but there were few to choose from. This was a hindrance in making the Web page visually stimulating.

THE LIFE OF DENG XIAOPING

1904 - 1997

1904.Born Deng Xixian (or also Deng Ziansheng) in Paifang, Sichuan Province, traditionally known for its political rebelliousness.

1920.Deng joined a work study programme and went to study in France. During his time there he absorbed Marxism and joined the European branch of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) in 1924.

Through the communist party Deng experienced the Russian Communist Underground in practice as he lived in Moscow for eleven months in 1926.

1927. Deng returned to China to become involved in Chinese Communism. He was appointed Chief Secretary to the party Central Committee and was involved in secret party work, particularly based in Shanghai. He joined a guerrilla army who's assignment was to create a Soviet government in Guangxi. This was a failure and caused Deng to join Mao Zedong in Jiangxi province, fighting against

the Kuomintang (KMT).
