Supply Chain / Logistics Intern

This position will work with manufacturing and materials management. Responsibilities will include conducting analysis and research, and making recommendations for the appropriate supply chain strategy for each component as needed. Other projects will include analyzing shipping and warehousing costs for major components based on volumes, modes of transportation, and geographical location. Recommend goals for the achievement of such metrics as inventory reductions through supply chain model implementations. Utilize process-mapping techniques to document and provide baseline recommendations for the development of kanbans, and other inventory management systems.

Process Improvement Intern

This position works with manufacturing management and will assist in creating, controlling and improving manufacturing processes. This involves participation in project implementation teams assisting in process design and process improvement activities. This may include identifying process improvement opportunities and developing solutions using principles of lean manufacturing and other related tools. This position will assist in analyzing work flows, developing work instructions, and audits and for plans and programs to support continuous quality improvement. The intern may assist in the creation, implementation, and evaluation of other Total Quality Management (TQM) and lean manufacturing programs.

Marketing / Project Intern

This position will be a key team member participating in a cross-functional team environment working on specified market research and marketing projects as assigned. Responsibility for research and project management will include proactively planning, organizing, and implementing projects given a defined goal and set of deliverables for the project. Examples of these projects may include conducting market research involving the applicability of a given set of wind turbine products with the potential to address different applications and markets, data collection via internet and surveys to define these market characteristics, and recommended approaches to penetrate and grow market share.

Engineering Intern

This position will work closely with the Project Managers and Engineering and will contribute to the design and building world-class small wind turbine systems. Responsibilities may include:

  • Develop solid models, engineering drawings and BOMS’s for new products.
  • Create and maintain 3-D CAD Models and Assemblies using SolidWorks and work with engineering and manufacturing staff on design for manufacturability.
  • Design parts in a variety of materials and processes including molded plastics, metal fabrication and assemblies, and other components.
  • Create prototype parts of CAD models using rapid prototyping technologies and traditional model making techniques.
  • Design complicated mechanical assemblies including components, mates, constraints and part interactions.

National Park Service Intermountain Region (2, paid)

The Intermountain Region of the National Park Service has begun inventorying greenhouse gases (GHG) at a handful of its 90 park units and proposes to continue creating inventories through internships. Interns would work full time in summer and 15-20 hours during the fall 2010 semester with possible extension. The project may draw upon expertise from Engineering, Architecture, Atmospheric Sciences, Resource Management, Environmental Studies, Climate Change Studies, or comparable fields.

Colorado National Monument Biological Sciences Technician Plants(2, paid)

Radiation Exposure Compensation Act Program Internship (paid)

U.S. Department of Justice is seeking Native American students interested in an internship to educate Indian people who have been injured from uranium exposure. The informational luncheon on the NAU campus will discuss the two week summer training in Washington, D.C. (expenses paid) with summer work in the Four corners area. Grand Canyon Association Wildlife Program Intern (paid)

South Rim, Grand Canyon National Park

This internship will support Grand CanyonNational Park’s Wildlife Program in a study of Mexican spotted owl juvenile dispersal. The intern will live and work in the South Rim Developed Area, but extensive field work and a river trip will be required. The intern will initially assist in capturing juvenile Mexican spotted owls in the inner canyon for radio telemetry attachment and blood draws. In late summer the intern will assist in locating owls by triangulating the radio signal from three or more rim-based tracking stations and fixed-wing aircraft with wing-mounted tracking systems. This design will provide information on dispersal pathways, movement habitat, settling distances, and estimates of recruitment rate.

Rocky Mountain National Park GIS Wilderness Tech (paid)

The Continental Divide Research Learning Center, based at Rocky MountainNational Park, Estes Park, Colorado is seeking a student studying Geography, Environmental or Resource Management fields with strong GIS, computer, and statistical skills. This position will have significant office and field components. The office duties will includemaintaining and improving the research Access database. This database records several thousandrecords of research plots and equipment within the park. The database has a linked GIS layer and aseparate but linked photo database. The student will be responsible for improving the usefulness ofthe database, by adding additional database tables and by creating user friendly data entry forms.Extensive revisions may be required.The field component of this position will involve hiking off trail, in the company of one other

person, to remote wilderness areas verify the location and photograph and/or retrieve equipment

and plot markers. Student should have field experience using a GPS and GIS layers. On-the-job

training will be provided for the specifics of Rocky Mountain NP backcountry and safety practices.

The following internships are part of an NAU/Grand Canyon National Park partnership coordinated through the Landsward Institute. Ethnographic Resources Database Intern – Intern with anthropology background needed to conduct literature searches and populate a new NPS Ethnographic Resources Inventory database compiling the ethnographic resources of Grand Canyon National Park. The database collects data for a variety of resource types (places, natural resources, landscapes, etc). It provides a management description as well as the significance of the resource for multiple affiliated groups. The database tracks consultation trips and information for each resource. Literature searches will primarily consist of compiling consultation notes and other ethnographic data. This project could be accomplished from Flagstaff with occasional trips to the south rim; a small apartment is available for use at those times.

Corridor Trails Survey Interns (2) –Two interns with survey and GIS experience and familiarity with trail work/ maintenance are needed to survey and map the grades of corridor trails in the Grand Canyon—South Kaibab, Bright Angel and possibly the North Kaibab trail. Interns will work in a team, 9 days on/5 days off, hiking to work sites and camping on the rim or in-canyon campgrounds. Survey data will be used to prepare construction standards and cost estimates for trail upgrades.

Horace M. Albright Training Center Website Intern – The Horace M. Albright Training Center, a national training center for the National Park Service located at the south rim of Grand Canyon National Park, needs an intern to help finalize the NRS website and assist with preparations for meetings/ training courses, help with logistics, inventory of books, supplies, and course materials. Updating of course notebooks, data files and filing system could also be undertaken. Applicants must have web design/content experience and writing/ editing skills. Shared housing or a small one-room with kitchenette apartment at the training center will be provided.

Horace M. Albright Training Center Reservation System Design Intern – The Horace M. Albright Training Center, a national training center for the National Park Service located at the south rim of Grand Canyon National Park, needs an updated reservation system for the year-round use of Kowski Hall classrooms and the approximately 65 apartments available for students attending classes. This intern will design a computerized reservation system to replace the current Excel spreadsheet system. This project could be accomplished from Flagstaff with occasional trips to the training center; a small apartment is available for use at those times.

NPS Fundamentals Program Intern – NPS Fundamentals is a course that targets all new National Park Service employees within their first three years with the agency. The course includes a two-week residential portion hosted at the Albright Training Center. The intern will assist with classroom and "behind the scenes" activities for the residential portion of the course including course coordination, audio-visual operation and assisting guest instructions. When classes are not in session, the intern will inventory supplies, help with the update and revision of course materials, update and modify the electronic filing system used to store Fundamentals materials. Shared housing or a small one-room with kitchenette apartment at the training center will be provided.

Law Enforcement Intern – Intern needed to compile a manual including a comprehensive jurisdictional inventory of enabling legislation for Grand Canyon National Park, aspects of 16 USC, solicitor opinions on boundary issues and unique areas/ situations where the NPS might have primary jurisdiction for investigating a crime or accident (e.g., NTSB, FAA, US Post Office, railroad, etc.), all memoranda of understanding with other law enforcement agencies, and authorities to enter into such agreements. This project would encompass jurisdictional issues and historical disputes between the Department of Interior, the State of Arizona and in some cases Tribal lands.

Kaibab National Forest Summer Interns (14, paid)

Williams and Jacobs Lake, Arizona

Up to 8 interns on the Williams Ranger District and up to 6 students on the North Kaibab Ranger District needed to assist in the signing of Forest Service roads. Duty stations will be in Williams or Jacob Lake. The goal is to sign all of the high clearance vehicle roads within the Williams and North Kaibab districts. The job consists of installing signs at the intersections of the roads on the Kaibab National Forest. In addition, interns may work with GPS units to assist management in collecting field data. The job schedule will be 10 hours per day, 4 days per week (Monday through Thursday). The pay is GS-03 step 1 (about $12+/hr). Grand Canyon Association Vegetation Program Intern

North Rim, Grand Canyon National Park

This internship will support Grand Canyon National Park’s Vegetation Program in the North Rim Developed Area. Most work will be focused in the village area, as well as at established viewpoints, such as Cape Royal and Point Imperial, and along trails. The intern will perform site maintenance, including watering, at restoration sites that were planted in 2008 within the developed zone. They will also work on surveying and removing high priority invasive species throughout the developed areas. The intern will have the opportunity to hike and explore more of the North Rim while collecting seed and cuttings for future restoration projects. The intern will work very independently as the primary representative for the Vegetation Program on the North Rim. The primary objectives of this internship will include: 1) seed and plant material collection, 2) implementing and monitoring restoration projects, 3) inventorying, surveying and mapping native, exotic and rare plant species, 4) removing priority exotic plant species, 5) using GPS units, compasses, digital cameras and multiple data forms to document exotic plant management and site restoration activities, 6) coordinating, educating and supervising volunteer groups to complete the above-listed work.

Grand Canyon Association Archaeology Intern

North and South Rim, Grand Canyon National Park

This internship will support Grand Canyon National Park’s Archeology Program in completing archeological surveys, compliance monitoring and ruins preservation on the north and south rims of the park. Glen Canyon National Recreation Area Invasive Species Removal and Replanting (paid)

This is a summer internship for a Native American student. The intern will support resource management personnel to conduct phased approach restoration projects to remove invasive species and replant with native vegetation. Restoration will be focused on riparian corridors as well as upland areas. Glen Canyon National Recreation Area Rare Plants Intern (paid)

This is a summer internship for a Native American student. This intern will learn botanical skills, including plant identification, field sampling techniques, vegetation ecology, rare plant monitoring, and data management and analysis. Through lab, office and field work, the student will help with sampling and assessments of rare plants, monitoring long-term vegetation plots, completing rangeland health assessments, and spring/hanging garden monitoring. Training will be hands-on in the field and office, and will include Excel spreadsheet data management and data analysis with statistical programs including PCORD and SX. There will also be opportunities in learning water discharge and quality field sampling methods, GPS use, and GIS analysis and mapping.

STARS Reporting System Intern (volunteer, academic credit)

NAU Office of Sustainability

NAU's Office of Sustainability is seeking motivated Juniors or Seniors from any major to assist with implementation of the new Sustainability Tracking and Assessment Rating System (STARS). STARS is a transparent, self-reporting framework for colleges and universities to gauge relative progress toward sustainability. The system uses self-reported data to assign a sustainability score to the University. This score can then be compared relative to other colleges and universities in order to accurately assess where NAU stands as a "green" university. Interns will work during summer and fall 2010 to gather campus data, compile the report, and upload information related to the STARS program. Internships are typically 10 hours per week for 15 weeks and can be completed for class credit as an upper level internship. Call to set up a meeting and discuss qualifications.
