Section 2: Non-Nursing Students

  1. Call your local hospital(s) and ask the maternity care coordinator or head nurse of the maternity unit what their Cesarean birth rates are. Compare to this list. In a short paragraph (1-3 sentences), share what you learned. Helpful tip: you will be calling your hospital again for an exercise in exam 5. Consider combining these into one phone call. In exam 5, you’ll be asked to learn about any unique or special labor and delivery options they may have for mothers whose newborns will need intensive care (anticipated or unexpected), and to familiarize yourself with any standard protocols for transporting, visiting, care and discharge. If you cannot connect with anyone, you can turn in your exam and come back to this question later. Whatever the experiences are on this journey can count for your answer (i.e. were the resources limited, were the professionals open and friendly, how might this relate to a client’s journey for answers?)

Answer will be personal for each students experience.

You will need: an ice cube, a bowl, and a clock. At the start of one minute, squeeze the ice cube in your hand. When the minute is over, release the cube into the bowl, for one minute. At the start of the next minute, squeeze the ice cube again for one minute. You are squeezing for one minute with one minute break in between. Or, you can complete this project by filling a deep bowl with ice and water, placing your hand into the bowl during the timed intervals.

How many times do you do this before it becomes uncomfortable? When it becomes uncomfortable, what mental process do you do? What behaviors do you exhibit? Take careful note of what thoughts you have, and share them with the class.
