“Good Practices and Innovations” on Gender Equality in Organizations and Programs in Management Education
PRME Gender Equality Working Group
January 2013
Introduction
The UN PRME Working Group on Gender Equality has at its core the aim of identifying resources and innovative practices in curricula and research relating to gender equality in management education.
In particular, the Working Group is working in three related areas to build up a repository of
(A) Teaching Resources,
(B) Research Materials, and
(C) Good Practices and Innovations in Organizations, Programs and other Resources
all related to gender equality in management education at higher education level.
“Good Practices and Innovations” on Gender Equality in Organizations and Programs
We are seeking to build our Repository of information and examples of good practices and innovations on gender equality.
Note that we avoid the idea of “best practice” as we recognise that practices are context specific and contingent upon the relevant circumstances in that specific situation. Practices may vary dependent on national culture or social and cultural contexts, so we do not imply that there is one “best” practice. Rather, we are seeking examples of “good practices and innovations” where the interest of gender equality has been extended or developed within organizations or programs related to the context of management education. The collection of such examples is designed to provide support for and facilitate the sharing of good innovative practice that can be acted upon in different contexts as a learning tool. Therefore we are seeking good practices and innovations from both management education and the workplace, as these can inform each other.
The PRME working group seeks examples and case studies of good and innovative practices (A) in colleges and universities, and (B) in the workplace.
(A) In Colleges and Universities
· Implementing gender equality into management education curricula and programs
· Implementing gender equality initiatives within the colleges and universities providing management education themselves, e.g.,
o Hiring committees
o Leadership roles
o Training and development of academic or administrative faculty
o Student recruitment and support
o Developing a culture which supports gender equality
· Management educators working with other organizations to share good practices and innovation on gender, which may include:
o Other colleges and universities
o Other departments or faculties within their own college or university
o Academic professional associations
o Other forms of organization, such as businesses, public, voluntary or the third sector
· Management educators learning from other organizations
(B) In Workplaces
· Implementing gender equality initiatives within workplaces in organizations or businesses, e.g.,
o Hiring committees
o Leadership roles
o Training and development of staff
o Staff recruitment
o Developing a workplace culture which supports gender equality
· Organizations working with others to share good practices and innovation on gender, which may include:
o Other businesses or organizations
o Other departments within their own organization
o Academic professional associations
o Academic institutions, colleges or universities
· Organizations learning from other organizations and/or management educators
Examples and Case Studies Format
With respect both to educational institutions and to organizations, we seek examples which give a brief outline of:
· The organizations involved
· The nature of the innovation and good practice
· How this was developed and implemented
· The outcomes of the implementation
· How any problems were overcome
· The lessons learned that could be useful for management education and employers
· Any supportive documentation that may be useful in replicating the innovation and good practice
