School Year:2014-15
The Facilities and Operations Department has put together this packet together to assist you with questions you may have concerning your building and grounds work environment.
The packet is also designed to address items such as; how to receive service from our department and any changes in the building regulations codes and laws that may affect you.
One of the first rules is, there always seems to be an exception to the rule. So the following information may sometimes have an exception to the rule. Next, there is always something left off the list, so therefore it will be updated once a year at the beginning of each year.

- Doors, Keys, Building Locks and Gates
E.Building Security, Codes, Alarms and Video Surveillance

G.Custodial Request

- General Safety
- Do not use objects (chairs, desks, books, etc.) to stand on, if you need a ladder ask the custodial staff they will bring you one. (OSHA) - Occupational Safety Health Administration – Enforcement Code)
- Burning candles inside the buildings are a fire hazard (The Law) – (NFPA) - National Fire Protection Association - LifeSafety Code 101 14.7.5 Open Flames) Open flames are only allowed only in Science Labs and Vocational Areas, no open flames of any kind in any other areas. Some candles also give off scents mistaken for natural gas odor. This causes false fire alarms and evacuations.
- Many areas around the District have wood, tile or terrazzo floors. When they become wet they are very slippery, please observe wet floor signs and the custodial staff cleaning floors. The most recorded problems are associated with slips and falls.
- Bringing Items from Home
- For everyone’s health and safety do not bring any chemical products to the District as in air fresheners, drain cleaners, disinfectants, glass cleaners, soaps, etc. If you have a need for these types of supplies, we will assist you in meeting your need. We have to keep records of every chemical used in the District (The Law) – The Texas Hazard Communication Act of 1985, Chapter 502 of the Health and Safety Code and Chapter 295 of Rules of the Board of Health - and to keep an up-to-date Material Safety Data Sheet on every product and all products must be properly and clearly labeled.
- Do not bring any type of (weed killers) herbicides or (bug killers) pesticides into the District. (The Law)– The Texas Pesticide and Herbicide Law – Chapter 76 of the Agriculture Code. Effective September 1, 1997 All Schools will be required to adopt an Integrated Pest Management Program. This is very strict and you could be fined or jailed for bringing such products to the District. Items such as; Round Up, Raid, 409 Cleaner, Bleach, Windex, Pledge wax etc… roach, ant, fly, bees, etc…sprays/powders/baits/whatever! This is a very serious concern by the State of Texas.
- IPM – Integrated Pest Management - (The Law)– The Texas Pesticide and Herbicide Law – Chapter 76 of the Agriculture Code. Effective September 1, 1997 All Schools will be required to adopt an Integrated Pest Management Program.
- This is a program where all pesticides (poisons to control pests) and herbicides (poisons to control unwanted plants and grass) are monitored throughout the whole District.
- At all buildings and grounds areas we have postings of when the area is treated. On the posting is the IPM Coordinator’s phone number (512-756-2972), if at any time you or a parent has a concern of what chemicals are used and where they are applied please refer them to the IPM Coordinator Number Posted. The IPM Coordinator person will be an employee of the Maintenance Department.
- We currently have licensed technicians by the State of Texas and we also contract out to a pest control company when needed.
- At any time during the year you may request more information from the Maintenance Office (512-756-2972). We would be more than glad to come and do an in-service for your school or department.
- Doors, Keys, Locks and Gates
- You need to make your key request to your Department Director or Building Principal. They are the ones who give you keys and codes.
- Do not give anyone your keys or security code; this is a very serious security problem that implicates you as the source of a security problem.
- Do not ask Maintenance/Ground/Custodial Personnel to unlock areas. If you do not have a key or a code to that area. You are unauthorized to that area and must see your Administrator for approval.
- If you lose a key please report it immediately so we can help re-secure the area.
- Re-entry after hours or weekends is allowed if scheduled with your Building Principal or Department Director
- If your campus has security gates and you have keys, make sure they are locked after you enter and when you leave.
- Building Security, Codes, Alarms and Video Surveillance.
- Every building in the District has some type of alarms, codes fire safety systems.
- Codes, passwords, etc… are your personal codes; if you give out your code you are giving away your security. Building Staff – Maintenance, Grounds, Custodians and etc… are not allowed to let you in or to give you a security codes.
- Video surveillance is throughout the District inside and outside. Not all areas are visible to the public. Just reminder chances are we have it on video.
- Facilities and Operations Work Requests (SchoolDude)
- Any District employee can be setup to enter work requests.
- All work requests are routed to the Principals or Directors for approval.
- When entering a work order request, it must include as much information as possible relating to the problem.
- In cases of an emergency, contact the Facilities and Operations office directly. 512-756-2972.
- All work must have a work request. (except routine and scheduled work)
G. Custodial Work Requests
- Each Campus or Department Secretary will handle all minor custodial work requests and do not require a work request to be submitted, (such as spills, etc….)
- If you are uncertain about work requests, please report them to the Campus Secretary first. They are trained in the work request system and can help guide you through the issue.
- The custodians are there to help when you need it, but remember the custodians are doing their regular cleaning duties and need to return to them promptly to complete their assigned duties.
- Playground Safety
- In the beginning of 1995, laws were passed that regulate school playground equipment and playing area. (The Law) – 74th Legislature HB 632 in 1995 – Requires that all new playground equipment, surfacing or installation must comply with U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission’s “Handbook for Public Playground Safety”.
- Before ordering new playground equipment or altering your play areas make sure you discuss your request with the Facilities and Operations Department.
- When adding new equipment to your play area, make sure to add in the cost of installation to the equipment. The companies who sell it also can install it.
I. Fire Safety
- Most all buildings have fire alarm systems.
- Each building’s fire alarm panel may be a little different, become familiar with it.
- Some of the schools have fire sprinklers and others may be partially sprinkled.
- All areas have smoke detectors. Even if you do not see them in your room they are in the heating/cooling duct systems.
- Fire alarms notify the Fire Department, which is why it is important to respond to all alarms with evacuation procedures.
- There are fire extinguishers located at key locations of each building, please become familiar with these areas.
- Please do not silence the alarms or reset the fire panel. You need to evacuate the building according to your evacuation plans. The Fire Department or Burnet CISD Maintenance Personnel are the only ones authorized to silence or reset the Fire Panels. You need to treat every alarm seriously.
J. Moving Equipment/Furniture
Principal/Director/Administrator must approve the moving of any equipment or furniture. Work orders must include location moving from and to, date move is scheduled, and who approves it. The work order needs information such as, approximate number of boxes, file cabinets, etc… to be moved and the location area where it is to be located. All computers are moved by the Technology Department.
K. Food Products
Overall any food in the District is under the direction of the Food Service Department. However, the Maintenance Department does have recommendations about food storage and they are:
1. Food left unattended in common refrigerators should be discarded.
2. Food stored in cabinet areas must be kept in a seal tight container, such as Tupperware, this will keep ants and other insects from contaminating the food and prevent pest infestation problems.
