Chapter Four
Answer the following questions in complete sentences.
1. Why does Jacob suspect that his father may be jealous of him?
2. Jacob’s father’s memory of Halloween (at the age of four or five) is that of a major disappointment. Explain why.
3. What is the significance of these lines, “I love you, I miss you, when are you coming back…” (p. 87)?
4. When the “old man” at the museum refers to “the war”, what is he referring to?
5. What does Jacob learn from Oggie?
6. Jacob is beginning to piece together clues, as one would on a treasure hunt of sorts. Identify three clues that Jacob gathers in this chapter.
7. Jacob does not believe that his grandfather was cheating on his grandmother. What reason does he offer to disprove his father’s suspicions?
Question for further thought
8. The letter that Jacob is given is mysterious and significant. In your opinion, how is the experience of receiving a letter different than that of its more modern version (an email)? Reflect upon any personal experience that you have with these two forms of communication.
In a response of at least five sentences, compare the difference between letters and emails. Consider people’s emotional response to them, their overall presentation, and the means through which they are sent.
