Brain Games-Mental GymnasticsShawna Huggins
Are you clever enough? Cryptopics, cryptograms, suduko and logic puzzles! Enter the world of other clever puzzle solvers such as Sherlock Holmes, Gandolf and Dumbledore as you discover the solutions to these amazingly fun brainteasers.

Come play with bubbles! Activities will be set up in a learning station format to foster open-ended investigation of what else? Bubbles! We will explore important science themes such as matter, stability, pattern and structure by playing with bubble walls, bubble windows, frozen bubbles, body bubbles and much, much more. Designed for kids who like to have fun and get messy! Material Fee: $5

Have you ever wondered where the Wee Folk live? Now you can build a cozy house to invite the fairies and gnomes to spend the winter with you. Children will design and build adorable shelters for their forest friends. Materials fee: $5

Butterflies & BumblebeesStacey Faught
Take an up close look at honeycomb, create homes for native bees and learn about how bees communicate. Take home inviting plants for butterflies, learn about their life cycle and where they migrate. We will also take a peek at a few of those other beneficial bugs we have around here at Willow Wind. It will be antenna-raising fun! Material Fee: $8

Clay Sculpture, The Wheel & More541 Carol StreetShari Craddock
Come create with clay. Learn hand-building techniques and the wheel. Some ideas are pagodas, cups with animal handles, plates with hand-painted scenes and a replica of your room or favorite playground. Pieces will be glazed and fired. Other projects include printmaking and paper marbleization. Material Fee: $10

This workshop will use theater games to stretch children’s imaginations, develop cooperation skills and increase self-confidence while creating stories and having fun!

Creepy Crawlies:Herpetology WorkshopAndy Bayliss
Let’s check out snakes and frogs and other reptiles and amphibians! We’ll start with looking here at Willow Wind under snake boards and in the ponds. We may also learn from some captive or pet animals. We’ll discuss anatomy, adaptations, habitat and classification, but mostly just enjoy touching, watching and drawing these amazing creatures. Bring outdoor clothing and a water bottle. Material Fee: $1

Drawing Amazing AnimalsCybele Grimes
In this workshop we will develop our understanding of the shapes that make up the world around us and apply that knowledge to art. We will use movements, literature and some drama o excite our creativity. We will use pen, watercolor and charcoal to create beautiful artwork of amazing animals. Material Fee: $10

Ethnobotany: People Using PlantsJessie Camp
People have always depended on plants for survival. In this workshop we will do lots of hands-on activities with plants to learn how both Native Americans and modern people use plants for medicine, food and fiber products. We’ll grind grains using authentic mortars and pestles, weave plant fibers for rope and make our own herbal remedies. If there’s time, we’ll look around Willow Wind’s great outdoors to find our local useful plants.

If you like to play games, this is the class for you. We will have fun playing and using cooperative skills. We will play lots of playground and outdoor competitive and cooperative games. Bring your ideas to class and we will try it out!

Improv FunEve Smyth
During this three-hour workshop students will get a crash course in improv fun! Through theater games and exercises, students will develop skills to create and perform their own stories. Students will learn to tap into their spontaneity, discover characters and expand their narrative skills.

Lunch Bunch
This is an opportunity to have lunch at the Willow Wind Community Learning Center with your friends. We will eat together, talk and share ideas. After the eating is done, there will be some time for outdoor play. Weather permitting; we will be eating outside at the picnic tables. If you are going to be on campus at this time, and not in class, you must register for lunch bunch.

Midsummer Dream Installation Art PieceAllison Lowe
Briscoe Art Wing wants us to create an installation art piece for the second annual Midsummer Dream Festival! Love, dreams and fairyland are our palette. An installation is a designed environment installed in a space temporarily. Students will view a variety of famous installations for inspiration, research Shakespeare’s Midsummer Night’s Dream and create the artwork as a group. This is a great opportunity to work with an installation artist and be involved with a community event.

Mixtures, Potions & ConcoctionsBecky Brown
We will use kitchen staples such as flour, salt, milk and cornstarch to make all kinds of fun, surprising, messy and even edible concoctions. Play Dough! Bath Salts! Flubber! Crystals! Ice Cream! Oobleck! We will mix and play together outside with some time each day for reading stories together about what we are exploring. Material Fee: $8

Mock Orange MagicAndy Bayliss
Mock orange is a wonderful, wildlife-loving native shrub, which can be enjoyed in bloom along Lithia Park in June. In this class, students will learn how this shrub connects to the environment by feeding moths, butterflies, juncos, bluebirds, quail and grosbeaks. Mock orange is also an excellent erosion control plant. We’ll discuss and read about it in class and each child will plant a mock orange and enter the record into the Children’s Wildlife Tree Book with photographs and drawings. Some parent help is needed. Bring outdoor clothes and a water bottle. Material Fee: $3

Nature Songs & ChantsJessie Camp
Learn about and celebrate nature through song! We’ll sing-a-long with the guitar and learn some rounds and chants together in celebration of nature’s animals, plants, cycles and elements. You’ll have something to sing about to friends and family in the outdoors this summer.

Swords & Shields: Imagine the Middle AgesVernon Pew
In this class students will create high quality, carefully finished accessories for Medieval Make Believe. Swords and shields come in many styles and children will have the opportunity to design, build and finish their own. Students who sign-up for this class will be expected to put extra effort into sanding and finishing these projects. The finished products will endure years of imaginary play. Materials fee: $5

Under One RockAndy Bayliss
We’ll use the nature book Under One Rock with its playful language and inviting illustrations as a springboard to investigate invertebrates and their dark, moist habitat under rocks and wood around Willow Wind. We’ll record with discussion, drawing, painting and some writing for students who want to. Bring outdoor clothing and water bottles.

Water Studies at North Mountain ParkJudith Anne McBride
Come down to North Mountain Park for a day of learning about how water is used by people, plants and animals. We will make a model of the watershed, investigate the area along the creek, sample the water quality of Ashland Creek, reflect on the water and participate in stewardship activities. Water shoes or boots are recommended. Please bring a lunch. Afternoon snack is included with the fee. Meet at North Mountain Park Nature Center. Material Fee: $7

Yearbook-Carnival PrepMary Kelly
The Willow Wind Carnival is coming to town! This yearbook workshop will be a little on the wild side as we make the preparations for our Fall Carnival. We’ll have lots of fun as we design and construct exciting games, sort and price cool prizes and develop our advertising campaign. Come with your creative ideas and willingness to work together as a team.
