READ 180 Syllabus – Next Generation

Course Description:

This course is a comprehensive reading intervention program designed to meet the needs of students whose reading achievement is below proficient level. Data from schools across the country show that READ 180 students frequently show marked improvement. The instructional model is based on at least a 60-minute block of time. The class begins with 15 minutes in whole group instruction. During this time, the teacher will follow key instructional routines for reading, vocabulary, and writing. Next, students participate in three 15 minute rotations. These rotations consist of:

1. Independent reading time where students choose paperbacks or audio books to read.. Writing instruction where students complete graphic organizers, quick-writes, and reading logs.

2. Small Group Instruction where the teacher provides individualized instruction & support.

3. Reading instruction via the READ 180 software where students are offered intensive & individualized practice on the computer.

Skill Development: The skills that are developed using READ 180 are phonetic awareness, phonics, fluency, text comprehension, vocabulary, spelling, and writing.
