Job Summary:
This individual provides direct site supervision for the Saint Augustine Lighthouse and Museum, Inc. (SAL&M) in the absence of the Deputy Director. The role is to ensure our historic site is staffed and functions in accordance with the museums’ mission primarily during evening and weekend hours. He or she must operate with a high degree of independence and regularly uses judgement and discretion in accomplishing the staffing and physical needs of the museum. This position reports directly to the Deputy Director and communicates specific needs, concerns, and issues affecting museum operation.
This role provides daily oversight of programs covering several or all of the following areas: Site schedule, employee and volunteer training, safety inspections, disaster planning, site maintenance, preservation of historic structures, assists with educational programs, outreach and site tours (private or general) event planning and implementation.
The duties and responsibilities for this position are in compliance with standard operating procedures, and comply with the employee handbook.
Other duties include assisting as needed with all operations of the St. Augustine Lighthouse and Museum.
The site manager helps the staff on a regular basis, assisting with safety programs, and assisting with other departmental or operational duties as required.
Major Responsibilities:
The maintenance and updates of the Base/Tower site schedule and works closely with the Volunteer Coordinator, Education Dept and Museum Gift Shop Manager to ensure that all shifts are covered during operational hours.
The site manager works with the Deputy Director in the following activities: assessing, planning, and implementing site safety procedures and disaster planning.
Assists the Deputy Director with maintaining the lighthouse rotation mechanism and the lens as an operational private aid to navigation.
He or she will be on-call for emergencies after hours at the light station, i.e., power failure, police alarm calls, etc.
Includes assisting the maintenance department as needed to ensure an optimal visitor experience.
Assists with on-site employee/volunteer training for accuracy of information being taught and to ensure excellence in customer service is provided.
Assists the Education Department as needed with tours/programs.
Assists with planning, set-up, and operation of lighthouse/cultivation events.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Scope:
This is an intermediate, professional level position.
Incumbent must possess a strong commitment to the mission and success of the museum. They must be able to work independently and be able to make informed decisions. They must be extremely flexible, able to adjust to emergency calls and short-notice changes in schedules. He or she must possess a strong can-do attitude.
(This position may include additional compensation above the base salary; it will only apply if it is in writing in the signed offer letter. The offer will clearly define the quarterly goals and the calculation formula.)
Qualifications:
High School Diploma or equivalency required. Bachelor’s degree in History, Museum Studies, Historic Preservation, Archaeology, or other related field, or similar work history desired.
Essential Functions/Physical Requirements:
The duties above indicate the essential functions of the job. Physical requirements are those present in normal office environment conditions, as well as long hours worked outside in the elements. Must be able to climb the 165 foot lighthouse tower and perform required duties for periods of 2.5 hours. Operational flexibility is required to meet sudden and unpredictable business needs. Must be able to work in a typical Florida climate of high humidity/heat or damp cold; also must be able to stand and/or sit for long periods of time while being friendly to visitors.
