PINK Sneakers Program Promotes Exercise for Cancer Survivors

PINK Sneakers helps breast cancer survivors through walking.
For survivors of breast cancer, remission is just the beginning of maintaining their health and quality of life. There are two things any survivor can do to improve both: maintain a sense of community with other survivors and exercise more often. PINK Sneakers, a walking club that brings survivors together in a bid to maintain a healthy body and healthy mind, allows you to do both.
PINK Sneakers
The program is designed to promote health and recovery for breast cancer survivors through education and physical activity. Designed by the University of Toledo's Center for Health and Successful Living, the program offers friendship and support through walking. They participants truly live up to their motto: "Let's Walk and Talk."
Benefits
Virtually all credible medical professionals agree that physical activity helps prevent cancer from returning. Joining a walking club will also improve your overall health and help you mentally by helping you meet friends and survivors who understand what you're going through. It is networks like these that make full recovery possible through support networks.
Where and When
The group meets every Tuesday and Thursday from noon to 1 p.m. at OttowaPark, the Main Shelter House on Kenwood Blvd., across from the ToledoHospital. Interested in joining other survivors who also want to improve their health and chances of staying well? Call Jeannine at the Center for Health and Successful Living at (415)530-5119.
About Walking
Walking is an easy, fun, healthy, low-impact cardiovascular exercise that engages the entire body and has a meditative effect on the mind. It tones the muscles, strengthens the bones and ligaments, and improves heart and respiratory function, all of which are proven to aid survivors in remission.
PINK Sneakers is Toledo's answer to beating cancer. The walking club provides the dual benefits of physical activity and mental stability through friendship and support networking. There are few people whose family hasn't been impacted by breast cancer. If you know a survivor in the Toledo area, tell them that PINK sneakers could help them continue to beat cancer.
