Capacity Conversions Word Problems
Directions: Using the conversion chart created earlier, answer the conversion questions below. Make sure you show all your work and circle your final answer.
1. Henry just bought a new fish tank. It can hold 30 gallons of water. He only has a pint sized container to use while filling up the tank. How many times will he have to fill the pint sized container to fill up the entire fish tank? What sized container would be better for him to use? Explain your answer.
There are 8 pints in one gallon. Henry will have to fill up the container 8 times for each gallon of water. If there are 30 gallons multiply 8 x 30 and the answer is 240 times. He would be better off filling a gallon sized jug 30 times.
2. Susan said she sold more lemonade than Zach. Susan sold 24 cups of lemonade and Zach sold 5 pints of lemonade. Is Susan right or wrong? Explain your answer.
If you convert 5 pints into cups you will find that Zach sold 10 cups of lemonade which means Susan was right because she sold 24 cups.
3. The medicine dropper can hold 5mL of medicine. How many times would a person have to fill the medicine dropper up to fill a medicine bottle that can hold 1 liter? Explain how you solved the problem.
1 liter holds 1000 mL which means you would have to take 1000 divide by 5 and you get 200. This means you would have to fill the medicine dropper 200 times to fill the one liter container.
4. Sharon has 2 gallons of juice for the party. If she gives each of her 20 student’s one cup of juice to drink, how much juice will she have left?
There are 32 cups of juice in 2 gallons. If she only fills up 20 cups, that means she will have 12 cups left over.
5. Malik is supposed to take 10mL of medicine each day for 15 days. How much medicine did Malik take at the end of the 15 days? How much medicine is left in the bottle if the bottle contains 1 liter?
Malik took 150 mL of medicine in fifteen days because you multiply 10 x 15 to get a total of 150. If the medicine bottle holds 1 liter you must take 1000-150 to get 850mL left in the bottle.
