Administrative Committee Report /
- Updates on participants and meetings: Noell has left the administrative committee, Kim Stanek has joined
- NMOCA meeting attendance numbers have been waning and can be improved
- After some discussion about strategies for improving meeting attendance, (e.g. move meetings to evenings or other times to accommodate parents and physicians; meet quarterly, etc.), it was suggested that we survey the membership to find out what people prefer
- Partnership Involvement Agreement forms (PIA): Geri urged participants who haven’t sent them in to fax them to Kathy Moseley at the number listed in form
- Asked that membership frequently visit the NMCOA website, as there are frequent changes and additions
- Opportunities for a new collaborative activity among committees
- Promote a new nationwide volunteer program called Allergy Community Experts (ACE) developed by Allergy Asthma Network (a national well-known asthma and allergy awareness advocacy group)
- ACE is comprised of healthcare provider volunteers to increase anaphylaxis awareness and preparedness in clinics, schools, emergency facilities and more
Laurel McCloskey will continue to work on the website page development and will report on progress at each meeting. Email Laurel, , with any website ideas or changes
Geri will be receiving packets of information about ACE and at the August meeting she would like to distribute information and get input from membership about how we can play a role in this program
Education Committee Report /
- Dr. Marosi was successful in getting the first publication in the New Mexico Medical Society newsletter
- Pediatric Society online
- Dr. Stoltzfus wants another article about Stock Emergency Medication
- Kathy wrote a draft short paragraph on the inhaler grids and passed to Susan Acosta for sharing with the education committee for review
- Cindy wants to share that she’s waiting for IT from DOH to make an interactive Asthma Action Plan possible
- Hosted with nmasbhc.org, if not able to get on the DOH website quickly
- With the school nurse advisory committee the Asthma Action Plan is a priority, feedback that it is too busy, need to be an electronic form, would cue providers
- Want the plan, but may give a simpler form to the family
- Need to go through the DOH legal council
- Plan for the Back to School day with asthma supplies day, hope it would continue, but decided to not have any tables due to the space at UNM, this for APS only
- Susan Acosta wants recommended we look at APS’ back to school event and share statewide as a model. Kathy has sent her the back to school with asthma checklist and AAP handed out last year
- This year Kathy and Ruth Ann will explore adding flyers into the Back to School free supply bags with APS
- One idea to increase Asthma Action Plans in the schools: Offer an incentive for the Asthma Action Plan, reinforce positive behaviors, kids are competitive, instill the importance to get recognition
- Dr. Rainey is doing everything in the guidelines, but no one is showing up for spirometry and planned visits, what can we do together?
Follow-up with Ruth Ann to check on the attendance list to follow-up with students to attend with Asthma Action Plan lists to see if it is helpful
Policy Committee Report /
- Parents Reaching Out as a collaborating partner, PowerPoint from the Health Liaison (see slides)
- A 504 school plan is put into place for students with asthma if there is more of a need to communication and coordination that goes up and beyond what is being done
- The larger schools districts have programing and school nurses in place, so a need for a 504 is less than a school without a school nurse or supports in place
- More likely to be moderate or severe, a way to focus efforts
- ALA looked at how they connect, Kathy will give an Asthma 101 talk on August 17th at the PRO office from 5-7pm with the Native American parent support group, Spanish liaison and Asian liaisons to be arranged
- Liaisons can possibly arrange translation, education committee members are welcome to join
- PRO is starting an ECHO webinar, focusing on financing and there will be an opportunity for one focusing on asthma financing
- Consider introducing the parents to the Allergy Asthma Network, there is literature in various languages, can work with groups to get materials
- Attending the Health Council Meetings for connection with Multi Unit Housing ALA program may be helpful. Place matters information given to Natalie Pena, Director of Programs at ALA. And of the multi unit housing initiative.
- There is a refugee conference on June 24th. In New Mexico the Southeast region has programing for the unaccompanied minors- a resettlement program
- Currently in the Metro Area our refugee program supports families as well and the school that is mostly impacted is Highland as they have a school based health center
- There is a possible opportunity to reach out to refugee programs to meet where people are, the refugee population may be expanding
- Step therapy collaboration, from the Arthritis Foundation
- Dr. Harkins has trouble with if a patient has moderate or severe asthma and tries to treat at the highest level necessary to obtain control without beginning at the first step
- Poorly controlled you want to start at a high step, but getting kicked out if not started at step one
- Also a problem if changing insurance plans
- Consider the costs saved if use step therapy
- Look at the model bill for step therapy and consider how to support and how to advocate for this
- Inhaler grids on the website:Kathy has worked with three MCOS to update by May, all say two inhalers and two spacers
- United Healthcare says that pharmacists may have to call for an override, every six months can touch base
- Laura is going to try to eliminate the required phone call override, need to talk to the national people
- Stock emergency meds follow-up, NMCOA wants Dr. Winona Stoltzfus to write a publication for the education committee
- DrStoltzfus provided an update to Kathy that three school districts have approved the implementation of Stock Emergency Med Act for 2016-2017 school year, including Farmington, Rio Rancho, and Las Cruces
- Moriarity is considering – pending board approval for June
- Council needs to take a look at models for financing and Kathy suggested that Susan ask someone from Rio Rancho to come and talk to present their model
- Sustainability of the program has to be looked at for long term, this is the major barrier of school boards, where will the money come from, includes licensing fee and ongoing equipment
- Need parent input for this
Native American parents support group liaison, Dolores Harden, Asthma 101 presentation August 17th at PRO office 1920 B Columbia Dr. Albuquerque, 5-7pm, possible Navajo speaker AlvinaSandovol
Vietnamese parent support group liaison is not yet introduced
**** to coordinate with Rio Rancho contact to determine what their funding plan is for now, invite the right partners to come and visit
Other business /
- Administrative Committee has been discussing and working toward solving the issue of difficult communications when people attend meetings by phone, several suggestions ensued from discussion:
- Meet at United Way Offices
- Reorganize the tables close together so all attendees are within hearing range
- Look at Cooperative Education Services (CES)offices for possible meeting space. Their communications system is a Polycom Surround Sound and meant for large groups and it is free of charge for non-profit groups
- Could use a microphone to use in the system
Next meeting / UPDATE: Thursday, August 16, 8-9:30 a.m. at the Cooperative Education Services offices at 4216 Balloon Park Rd NE, Albuquerque, NM 87109. Look/Ask for the Roadrunner Room.
Meeting adjourned at 9:30am.
