African Refugees

Background

The Central African Republic is a country that has faced many political, humanitarian, and military crises in the past fifteen years. Due to this unrest, many of its citizens have been internally and externally displaced. Externally displaced individuals found a haven in Chad and Cameroon. Interestingly, on top of this displacement issue and despite the unrest, refugees have immigrated into the country for shelter from their own nation’s difficulties. The nation hosts 20,000+ refugees mainly from the DRC. Many displaced persons within the Central African region accept assistance from UNHCR with basic needs such as water, shelter, and education. In addition to that the area is filled with large amounts of political and military crisis to the point that human rights violations are occurring all over the place. The country itself is suffering from extreme levels of poverty and famine. High unemployment destroy the nation as well, also poor infrastructure provides logistical and administrative challenges to humanitarian operations. Overall the hardships that are occurring in this area needs to be dealt with immediately.

United Nations Involvement

The current UNHCR Main Targets and Objectives include a clause that caters to refugees of the Central African Region. These target goals include fair protection processes and documentation, security from violence and exploitation and basic needs and essential services. Yearly, the UNHCR allocates 20-30 million used to protect the refugees of the central African region. In addition to that this area relies heavily on the UNHCR to aid it in its efforts to make this area livable and prosperous; however, it is extremely hard for one committee to solely focus on it, it needs multiple organizations and NGOs to aid it’s time to help this country. Some organizations such as IDPs and SGBV have helped but it’s still is not enough to drag this area out of this enormous hole filled with despair and poverty.

Possible Solutions:

Refugees should be encouraged to return to their country/location of origin. Assistance will be provided to those who require it. Healthcare and Education will be funded by the UN to encourage economic growth in affected areas. UNHCR will work in joint with UNICEF, UNDP, CARm and BINUCA to ensure that communities are re-developed in the proper manner.

Questions to consider:

How did this region end up like this?

What can other countries due to aid this situation?

How fast can this be resolved?
