Joint resolution congratulating Florence and Maurice Pennock on the occasion of their 60th wedding anniversary

Whereas, Florence Thelma Chase was born and raised in Middletown Springs in Rutland County, and

Whereas, Maurice Elbridge Pennock is a native of Johnson in Lamoille County where he was the oldest son of nine siblings, and

Whereas, Florence became a teacher in a one-room schoolhouse where she taught children in grades one through eight, and

Whereas, these two upstanding Vermonters met and were wed in Wallingford on December 5, 1941, and

Whereas, within days of their marriage, the United States entered World War II and Maurice entered the United States Army, while Florence continued her teaching duties in the one-room schoolhouse, and

Whereas, when Maurice returned to civilian life, they initially lived in Stockbridge, Mass., where Maurice worked in a sawmill, and, in 1947, Florence gave birth to their first child, Judith Ann, in nearby Pittsfield, and

Whereas, they soon returned to Vermont and resided in Manchester, and their younger daughter, Jill Ellen, was born in Bennington in 1952, and

Whereas, the Pennocks constructed their own house in Manchester which continued as Maurice and Florence’s very special home until 1999, and

Whereas, Maurice continued his employment in the wood industry until accepting a position at the Orvis Corporation and ultimately worked for the Brewster Funeral Service, a job he retained into his eighties, while Florence became the office manager at Heaslip Fuel, and

Whereas, when not at work or raising their children, the Pennocks participated in many community activities, including the Eastern Star, the Masons, the First Congregational Church in Manchester and the Catamount Gadabouts Square Dance Club in which they were enthusiastic dancers, and

Whereas, on December 5, 2001, Florence and Maurice Pennock, their daughters, son-in-law, and granddaughter, Emilee Noelle, celebrated the couple’s 60th wedding anniversary, a truly special personal milestone, now therefore be it

Resolved by the Senate and House of Representatives:

That the General Assembly congratulates Florence and Maurice Pennock on the wonderful occasion of their 60th wedding anniversary, and be it further

Resolved: That the Secretary of State be directed to send a copy of this resolution to Florence and Maurice Pennock at the Twin Maples Community Care Home in Bennington.
