Robert L. Scramlin
Robert (Bob) Louis Scramlin of Cherry Valley, NY and last 10 years of Johnstown, NY passed away Aug.23, 2013 at St. Mary’s Hospital in Amsterdam, NY.
He was born Oct.25, 1940 in Fox Hospital Oneonta, NY. The son of Louis G. Scramlin and Nellie (Wright)Scramlin. His Aunt Florence(Scramlin)Sinclair played a significant role throughout his life.
He helped the family operate Villaside Farm of Cherry Valley, NY. This was the Willson Homestead. The farm was started in 1738 by his Great, Great, Great, Great-Grandfather, Capt.James Willson. Capt. James Willson was from Ireland, a High Sheriff of Albany. He and others were commissioned by King George to survey the Mohawk Valley. He was the surveyor of the Lindsay Patent. The Lindsay Patent became known as Cherry Valley, NY. For his work King George of England awarded him and his brothers land just out of the town. He was Capt. at the time of the Cherry Valley Massacre (of which he survived).
Bob graduated from Cherry Valley Central School June 1958. He held the Office of State Reporter in the Future Farmers of America(FFA) 1958-1959 with the guidance of his advisor & mentor Jim Rose. As part of the FFA he went to many county fairs showing the Villaside Registered Holsteins. He also grew up learning to enjoy hunting. Which lead him to become an avid hunter. He went onto College at Cobleskill Ag.& Tech. He graduated with a degree in Agriculture in 1960. He then returned to the family farm.
After he finished farming in 1992 he went to work for Hustead Company for several years. Then he worked for the Walmart Distribution Center of Johnstown for 5 years, leaving due to illness.
He enjoyed collecting guns and was a lifetime member of the NRA. He had an extensive collection of model toy tractors and full size tractors. He was a member of the River Valley Tractor Club and the IH Collectors NYS Chapter 35.
He is survived by his longtime companion Roberta Healy. He is survived by his daughter Cynthia A. Scramlin(Earl) of Milford, NY and his son Ronald L. Scramlin(Sandra) of Cherry Valley, N.Y. Roberta’s family Tamara Healy, Charlene (Healy)Busch, her husband Al Busch and their daughter Alison. A cousin William Armstrong of NC.
Calling hours will be from 5 – 9 PM at the Ottman Funeral Home in Cherry Valley, NY Mon. Aug. 26, 2013. The tractor funeral procession will start there and go the Cherry Valley Cemetery on Tue. Aug.27, 2013 at 11am.
