FEBRUARY 2016

D

ear Parents and Families,

Wow, we cannot believe that February is here already! We survived the blizzard of 2016 A lot of materialwas covered, and we have lots more to go. Last month we celebrated the life and legacy of the late great Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. We talked about peace, love, kindness and respect. We took advantage of the snow/ice.The children were introduced to the scientific method and our students learned the idea that matter can change states. They discovered that water can be a liquid and a solid. They all were able to answer these questions…What conditions transform ice into water? Where does the water go? They enjoyed being scientist for the day!

Fabulous February promises to be a month filled with fantasticfundamental learning experiences. Please remember reading is very important for building your child’s language skills and expanding their vocabulary so read, read, read. This month, we will focus on blending (State Standard 3.3.C.1)sounds and reading 3 letter short vowel words, referred to as CVC (consonant vowel consonant words). We will begin “tapping out” words (sounding them out) like this: if we were to “tap out” the word bat, we would tap our pointer finger to our thumb for the first sound, “buh”, then we would tap our middle finger to our thumb for the second sound “a”, then we would tap our ring finger to our thumb for the final “t” sound. The sounds for bat are blended! Please ask your child to show you how to tap out a word!

This month we will also focus on…

February is Black History Month. We will talk about the achievements of relevant African Americans throughout Black History Month.
