The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) – Prohibits discrimination on the basis of disability in several areas, including employment: Employers…will be prohibited from discrimination against any qualified individual with a disability with regard to job application procedures: hiring, advancement or discharge; employee compensation; job training; and other terms…of employment.

Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) - Mandates that students with a disability, starting at least with age 14, include planning for transition to adulthood,(including employment,) as part of their individualized education plan (IEP).

The Rehabilitation Act Amendments of 1992 and 1998
  • Strengthens more choices, inclusion, and participation in society for people with disabilities: “disability is a natural part of the human experience and in no way diminishes the right of individuals to live independently; enjoy self-determination; make choices; contribute to society; pursue meaningful careers…”
  • Mandates a “presumption of employability” for all people with disabilities.
  • Places a new emphasis on telecommuting and self-employment.

Workforce Investment Act (WIA)
Provides for any person with a disability to enter a One-Stop Centerand receive career planning and job search services. Job seekers can go to One-Stop Centers to get for help with job placement. An employment counselor will help the job seeker identify interests, goals, skills, and work values, then help the job seeker identify possible career paths and job openings.
