Socratic Seminar Written Reflection: 50 points
You are responsible for turning in a one to two-page, single-spaced reflection about your experience within the Socratic circle. This reflection with be comprised of five sections: (1) evaluation of your role in the inner and outer circle, (2) evaluation of your group’s performance in the inner and outer circle, (3) identification of the strategies and techniques used to analyze and comprehend the passage, (4) additional analysis of the text, and (5) reflection on content.
Part 1: Evaluate your own performance in the inner and outer circle. Consider the following questions:
1. How would you rate your preparation for this Socratic circle? Why?
2. How would you rate your contributions (both the number of times you spoke and the quality of what you said) to the conversation of the inner circle? Why?
3. How would you rate the level of teamwork you displayed in the inner circle? Why?
4. How would you rate the quality of feedback you gave while you were in the outer circle? Why?
5. How could you personally have improved what transpired during the Socratic circle?
6. What goals do you have for your next Socratic circle performance?
Part 2: Evaluate your group’s performance
1. How would you rate your group’s preparation for this Socratic circle? Why?
2. How would you rate the quality of the overall conversation of your inner circle? Why?
3. How would you rate the level of teamwork displayed by your inner circle? Why?
4. How would you rate the quality of feedback your group gave while in the outer circle? Why?
Part 3: Strategies and Techniques for Comprehension and Analysis
Please list at least three strategies or techniques that were used by either inner circle to comprehend and analyze the selection of text. For each strategy/technique listed, write a two to three sentence description of how it was used. Ex: diction, tone, voice, structure, metaphor, symbolism, punctuation, simile, personification, etc.
Part 4: Additional Analysis
Please identify at least one strategy that was NOT employed in either inner circle. Write two to three sentences to explain how the strategy would have enriched the discussion of the text.
Part 5: Reflection on content
1. Write a central idea and thesis statement based on the meaning and importance of the ideas expressed about the text (you may go beyond the passage assigned for this statement). Please avoid a formulaic “When a person who . . . “ statement. Create a viable statement.
2. Outline, in paragraph form, the main points you would make in an “imaginary” essay based on your central idea and thesis statement. (no more than ten sentences)
