Description of Internship Site:

The UCSD Express to Success Programs (ETS) is a Student Affairs program at the University of California San Diego in La Jolla, CA. The ETS office is currently housed at RevelleCollege, one of six undergraduate colleges at UCSD; however, the program serves students from all six colleges and graduate programs. ETS offers an eclectic collection of non-credit leadership programs for beginning, intermediate and advanced students at all class levels, specifically in the areas of social confidence, interpersonal communication, and public speaking. With the assistance of ETS Graduate Interns and Peer Educators, the Director is responsible for effective implementation and assessment of quarterly seminars, yearlong leadership programs, specialized tracks, summer institutes, campus-wide presentations, and programming efforts for international and ESL students. The 2007-2012 ETS Strategic Plan outlines action items for further expansion of the department, directly addressing the anticipated enrollment growth of the university and technological expectations of incoming students. Currently, the ETS office houses the Director and one ETS Graduate Intern. Multiple graduate internships/assistantships will be available for the 2007/2008 academic year.

Graduate Intern Job Description:

The ETS Peer Educators, in coordination with the ETS Director and the ETS Graduate Interns, will be responsible for assisting in the design and implementation of new program initiatives, including: (1) leadership development programs and retreats; (2) special programs for international and ESL students; (3) web development (if able); (4) assessment and research; (5) grant-writing/fundraising; (6) marketing/outreach; and (7) facilitation of quarterly seminars. Specific job functions are flexible based on students’ specific needs and aspirations in terms of their own skill development and interests. This internship is intended to be experiential and “hands-on” – students will not be required to do administrative tasks other than those associated with their own specific programs or events.

Qualifications:

Qualified applicants must be enrolled as a full-time student in good standingat the University of California San Diego and have a strong desire to further develop skills in leadership, communication, public speaking, cross-cultural understanding, teamwork, social responsibility, self-awareness, goal setting, and other essential skills for both personal and professional success. Additionally, students must:

  • Possess strong oral and written communication skills, including proven ability to speak in front of small and large audiences.
  • Possess the ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Possess strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Be reliable and responsible.

Responsibilities:

ETS Peer Educators will be expected to:

  • In collaboration with the ETS Director and ETS Graduate Interns, design new ETS programming initiatives, including responsibility for various tasks associated with program implementation.
  • Prepare presentations and promote ETS programs and services to various academic and student affairs departments, including presentations at Winter and Spring Admit Orientations and Transfer Orientations in Fall Quarter.
  • Present quarterly sessions on interpersonal communication, public speaking, and leadership skill development and facilitate workshops as part of the Communicate UCSD! Intermediate Track.
  • Plan and prepare educational materials and activities for weekly seminars and/or workshops.
  • Manage attendance, assignments, and journal reflections for each class session.
  • Assist in the design of marketing materials and other online resources, including an online parent newsletter.
  • Provide web/technology support for the unit, if able.
  • Attend all staff meetings, programs for which you are responsible, and the Fall 2007 ETS Leadership Retreat.
  • Work collaboratively with the ETS Graduate Interns.
  • Assist in planning leadership retreat, recognition banquet/graduation, community service activities, and social events for ETS participants.
  • Assist in the administration of assessment measures and program evaluations.

Structure of Internship (Hours, Time Commitment, Paid/Non-paid):

The ETS Peer Educators are expected to work 10hours per week. At this time, the internship is non-paid. There is a possibility that a stipend will be available for undergraduate student interns beginning in Fall 2007.Students may earn academic credit through the Academic Internship Program ( if they have accumulated 90 units and have completed 2 upper division courses prior to the start of the internship. ETS Peer Educators are expected to attend all weekly staff meetings, all programs for which you are responsible, and the Fall 2007 ETS Leadership Retreat in October 2007. Other hours are flexible and can be worked into your academic schedule and from off-campus locations, including your home if feasible.
