Little Havroshechka

Adapted from a Russian folktale

By Katherine Pyle

(3) every day, the mistress told Havroshechka to sew and spin a mountain of clothing, which was terribly hard work. (4) The daughters sat in the sunshine watching Havroshechka as she suffered.

(5) One day, Havroshechka told the kind cow in the barn about her troubles. (6) “My poor girl,” said the cow, “I can help with your work. (7) All you have to do is look into my ear, and all your work will be done.” (8) She looked into the cow’s ear and suddenly all of her work was finished

(9) Havroshechka did this day after day, until the mistress found out about the cow. (10) As the mistress took the cow away, the animal whispered to Havroshechka, “Don’t forget me, and I will help you in your time of trouble.”

(11) Havroshechka did not forget the cow, and she planted an apple tree where the cow had grazed, hoping one day for the cow to be returned. (12) She watered it every day and it grew big and strong.

(13) one day, a handsome young man rode his horse by the tree. (14) Seeing the juicy, red apples, he called out, “Dear girls, I will marry the one who brings me a delicious apple from that glorious tree.”

(15) The mistress’s three daughters each tried to grab an apple, but the branches of the tree swung upward, out of their reach. (16) The girls were furious (17) As little Havroshechka approached, she thought about the cow who had helped her.
