I. Classroom Rules:

1. Preparation: Arrive at class with all materials (i.e. pencils, notebook, calculator, book, and completed homework).

2. Respect: Respect is of utmost priority in this classroom. All students will respect each other, the teacher, and the property of others. No profanity of any kind will be tolerated.

3. Tardy Policy: The door to the classroom will be shut as soon as the bell rings. If you are tardy (even if you have a pass), you will have to wait outside of the classroom for five minutes. If you have a pass, it will be considered excused. Otherwise, after three unexcused tardies and each subsequent tardy, you will be issued a classroom detention. Tardies reset each quarter.

4. Passes: Each quarter, you will be given four hall passes to use for any reason (restroom, locker, etc.) They may not be used in the first five minutes of class OR last five minutes of class. If you choose not to use your passes, you may turn them in at the end of each quarter for bonus.

5. Electronic Policy: You will have the opportunity to use technology in the classroom. However, you may only use your electronic devices when indicated by the teacher. No charging of cells phones is permitted. All electronic devices must be turned in on days of a quiz or a test. If you are caught using your device at an improper time, the procedure, which will reset each quarter, is listed below. Dot not abuse the privilege.

1st Offense: You will be told to put it away with no consequence. Consider it a warning.

2nd Offense: Your device will be placed “phone jail” until the end of the period, when you will be able to pick it up. Repeat offenses will be kept until the end of the school day.

Every Additional Offense: Your device will be taken to the office accompanied by a Friday Detention.

6. Calculators: If you wish to borrow a calculator, you must place your phone inside the calculator slot. This ensures that you will not leave with my calculator.

7. All rules contained in the student handbook must be adhered to.

II. Required Supplies:

  • Basic Scientific Calculator (i.e. TI-30, must have radical and exponent buttons as well as trig functions. Graphing calculator may be useful but is not required).
  • 3-Ring Binder with college-ruled loose-leaf paper. Must have sections for Notes, Homework, and Quizzes.
  • Blank 3 x 5 Notecards (100 count)
  • Pencils for all class work. Pens will not be allowed on homework, quizzes, or tests.
  • Graph Paper. This will be used for certain sections and WILL be required for all graphs drawn.

--You will have until Monday, September 5, to have all of the above supplies. You will receive a “Supply Credit” on Progress Book worth 10 points when you have demonstrated that you have these supplies.

  • Box of Tissues for class use. Bonus points will only be rewarded if you are able to calculate on the box the volume of the box of tissues. V = Bh. You have until Monday, September 5, to earn bonus for tissues.

III. Course Description:

Algebra II is a continuation of Algebra I. Topics explored will include functions and their graphs. Linear, polynomial, rational, exponential, and logarithmic functions will be investigated. Many other topics will also be explored, including factoring and conic sections. This course is designed with an emphasis on practice and conceptual understanding.

IV. Notes (5%):

Notes will be turned in at the end of each chapter. Each note will be worth five points and will be collected at the end of each chapter. Use your 3-ring binder to keep your notes organized. Late notes will not be accepted, unless you were absent on the due date.

V. Homework (15%):

Student will be assigned problems daily to help them practice the concepts. There will be three different types of homework assignments:

1. Daily Homework Assignments:

These include the daily homework assignments that will be turned in. The policies for these are as follows:

•All problems attempted with work shown—10 points

•Problems partially completed—5 points

•Not attempted—0 points

Students will be given a “grace” day on all assignments. A student can complete an assignment that an assignment that received zero credit. There are two stipulations on the use of a “grace” day:

•The “made up” assignment must be thoroughly complete and the student is responsible for turning it in the next class day. If requirements are completed, a ‘5’ will be recorded.

•If a student uses the “grace” day privilege too often, the teacher remains the right to remove the privilege.

Daily homework assignments will only be returned if you write “return” at the top of your paper.

2. Homework Checks:

Random in-class homework checks will be performed throughout each grading period. They are each worth five points and evaluated on the following criteria:

•5 pts: All completed, all selected problems correct.

•4 pts: All completed & most selected problems correct OR partially completed & all selected problems correct.

•3 pts: Partially completed & some selected problems correct.

•0 pts: No work done.

3. Graded Homework:

Some out-of-class assignments such as worksheets, Math XL online assignments, and practice standardized assignments will be given. All assignments are worth various amounts.

VI. Quizzes (30%):

Quizzes will be given frequently. They will cover homework assignments, readings from the text, class discussions, and activities. The point value of quizzes will vary depending on the length of the quiz. Quizzes over notes may be unannounced.

VII. Tests (50%):

Students will be given a chapter test at the completion of the chapter and are worth 100 points each. All tests will be announced well in advance. Students who are absent the day of a test may be given an alternate form of the original test when they return to school.

At the end of each grading period, a quarter assessment will be given on all material covered up to that point.

VII. Projects:

Each quarter, students will complete a project. Some may be completed as individuals and some may be assigned as group projects. Each project will count as a test grade.

IX. Grading:

Grades will be posted in Progress Book and can be checked regularly by students and parents. Grades will be weighted in the following manner:

•Notes: 5%

•Homework: 15%

•Quizzes: 30%

•Tests/Projects: 50%

The grading scale is as indicated in the student handbook.

X. Make-Up Policy:

It is the student’s responsibility to obtain make-up work from the teacher. Students have one day for each day of excused absences to complete make-up work. Any make-up work, including quizzes and tests, that are not made-up will be entered as zeroes.

NOTE: Keep all graded work until grades have been finalized for the nine weeks.

XI. Senior Addendum:

Each quarter, about three to four weeks into the term, if you are earning a grade of 70% or below, you will be asked to fill out a “Senior Fail Letter.” You will indicate what exactly you are going to do in order to pass the quarter. The letter will be sent to your guidance counselor, and in turn, will be sent home as well. It is imperative that grades are kept above this measure to ensure passing this course and graduating.
