What > The Vision: Give adults an opportunity to choose from and attend topics that are of interest to them by scheduling a variety of presentations that relate to the safety of our youth. These presentations will be providedby speakers from different places with various qualifications. Secondly, to encourage adults with or withoutchildren to attend so that we may C.O.M.E. together and learn about youth safety.Finally, to educate interested students in grades 7 – 12 by encouraging them to c.o.m.e. and participate in topics related to empowering their ability to choose safely at all times.

“How to Become Steward of Children”:We all know that child sexual abuse is a horrible, unimaginable event, but what can WE do about it? As adults, WE can make all the difference in the world. Stewards of Children, a nationally, evaluated program from Darkness 2 Light, is a revolutionary sexual abuse prevention training program that educates adults to prevent, recognize, and react responsibly to child sexual abuse. The program is designed for organizations that serve youth and recognizes that adults are responsible for the safety of children. Come discover how the program can come to your organization!. Presenters: Emily Pogue of Whole Health Outreach & Francie Vermillion of ReynoldsCountyHealthCenter.

“Live by Choice NOT by Chance”:The presenters will discuss the often irreversible effects of drinking and driving. They will remind you that sometimes the best way for you to tell your child that you love them is to tell them “no” and offer safe and healthy ways to enjoy life. Presenters; Student Members of EllingtonHigh School’s Team Spirit sponsored by Jodi Richards; School Nurse Assistant.

“Promoting Positive Interaction Among Peers”: The presenters will use a variety of role play scenarios to help participants see what happens to victims that are abused by their peers. Discussion will include but not be limited to types of abuse and the importance of treating all people with respect. Presenters: Student Members of the EllingtonHigh School’s STARS sponsored by Nancy Bland; Secondary School Counselor.

”Resources Parents Can Use”: The presenter will have a booth set up in the hall and a Internet accessible room. The purpose of the access is to encourage and allow participants the opportunity to locate resources that directly relate to them. The presenter will also have brochures, pamphlets, books, videos, and web addresses available that address a variety of issues. The presenter wants to help connect families with an appropriate agency, information, or sit down to discuss any concerns they are having. Presenter: Ceclie Goodman, Elementary School Counselor, EllingtonElementary School.

“The Importance of Character”: The presenters will perform a skit that teaches the importance of having good character traits. Special emphasis will be placed on the trait of KINDNESS. The skit is called “Cinderella”. Presenters: Student members ofEllingtonHigh School’s BETA Club, sponsored by Laurie Buffington; High School English Teacher.

“Violence and Talking With Your Children”:Are you a parent who is concerned about the violence in our society today and how it could affect your child? Between bullying, dating and themedia, there are several opportunities for our children to be exposed to violence. Come join us as we help you explore ways to talk about violence with your child or teen. We will also look at ways to manage anger and how to recognize if there is a problem. Finally, we will provide tips you can share with your teens about healthy and safe dating. Presenters: Emily Pogue of Whole Health Outreach & Francie Vermillion of ReynoldsCountyHealthCenter.

“Why do They Act That Way?: This session will help parents better understand the normal behavior in their children and teens, to spot potential delays, and common childhood disorders. You will also learn parenting tips for problem behaviors and find out where to go for help if an adult and their child are having problems. Presenter: Linda Potter, MA, Licensed Professional Counselor

Keynote Session

“Media Messages: What Are They Really Saying?”: This presentation will introduce the concepts of media literacy education and provide interventions designed to prevent substance abuse in youth. More now than ever, youth are exposed to messages that promote or entice them to participate in risky behaviors. During this presentation, we will analyze song lyrics, commercials, print ads, and movies to educate participants on the underlying messages being seen and heard by our youth.Presenters: Crystal Jones; BSBA, MSAPA; Director of Prevention and Education, SoutheastMissouriCommunityTreatmentCenter and Julie Thomas, AA, MSAPA, RASAC I, SoutheastMissouriCommunityTreatmentCenter
