INSPIRE Conference2012

Workshops on Standards

Sunday morning 24 June 2012

These two workshops are designed for those responsible for implementing INSPIRE and other Spatial Data Infrastructures (SDI), both at the project management level, and at the more technical level. The aim of the workshops is to enable attendees to find their way around the plethora of existing standards and identify those that are relevant to them. Technical guidelines currently being developed on the applicability of the standards to SDIs in general and INSPIRE in particular will be presented.

The INSPIRE Implementing Rules are underpinned by a set of International Standards for Geographic information. These standards known as the ISO 19100 series of standards are produced by a dedicated committee (referred to as ISO/TC 211). A corresponding committee in Europe, operating under the auspices of the European Standards body, CEN, adopt and adapt these standards as European norms for application within the European Union.

The workshops are designed to provide participants with background knowledge of the relevant geographic information standards within the context of INSPIRE. The first workshop will explain what the relevant standards are, how they are produced and maintained, and describe the work of CEN/TC 287, the European standards committee for geographic information. The second will provide a detailed view of current activities in providing technical guidance for implementing standards in the context of SDIs. In particular, it will deal with a major aspect of the current work of CEN/TC 287 to produce a multi-part Technical Report (TR 15449) explaining the standards, specifications, technical reports and guidelines required to implement spatial data infrastructures.

The workshops will be presented by experts from CEN/TC 287. The Chairman of the Committee, Rob Walker will facilitate the first session, and Martin Ford from the CEN/TC 287 Secretariat will facilitate the second. Other technical experts from project teams will provide input on particular topics.
