Background to Charity:

There are 3 seizure deaths a day in the UK, mostly in young and otherwise healthy people. Epilepsy Bereaved is a charity committed to prevention of Sudden Unexpected Death in Epilepsy (SUDEP) and other epilepsy-related deaths through research, influencing and support and involvement of the bereaved (

.

The experiences of bereaved families have been a powerful motivation for change since the charity founded in 1995.The charity has achieved our original objective of getting SUDEP recognised by epilepsy organisations; the medical profession and government. We produced the first evidence that some 42% of deaths are potentially avoidable and we have established the first specialist service for people needing support or involvement in the cause.

During 2011 we are piloting projects aimed at reducing risk including spreading awareness with a Global Conversation project with Epilepsy Australia and the development of UK Volunteer Ambassadors. We are also piloting involvement of the bereaved in SUDEP research as part of our formal research collaboration with King’s College, London.

Services to the bereaved will be extended this year with the development of one day conference events and a bereavement counselling service to build on our listening and advocacy service.

Epilepsy Bereaved is a member of the Neurological Alliance and the Joint Epilepsy Council for the UK and Ireland and within this umbrella organization are the leading national charity campaigning on the prevention of epilepsy deaths.
