Hattie’s Birthday Box

BACKGROUND: We just finished reading and discussing Hattie’s Birthday Box. As Hattie moves westward, she experiences many hardships and challenges. No matter how difficult the challenges became, she always knew they never got their worst.

DESIGN CHALLENGE: Design and create a card that includes at least one pop-up and it must be centered around a birthday theme. You must display the title of the book, the author’s name, and your name on the front of the card. It should be decorated neatly and appropriately. The inside of the card should contain all 4 hardships Hattie experienced and the lessons she learned from them in a sequential order. They must be written neatly and in complete sentences using correct grammar and spelling.

MATERIALS:

glitter / yarn or string / glue
puff balls / craft sticks / tissue paper
stickers / pipe cleaners / moveable eyes
notebook paper / printer paper / tape

TOOLS:

pencil / computer / scissors
glue stick / color pencils / crayons
hole punch / textbook

The design challenge was written to be a reading comprehension lesson as well. This will reinforce the skills to read to locate and highlight key information. Below is the criteria in a list format for your reference and lower ability students.
