The Vice-Chancellor and Chairman of Senate, Prof. Zana Akpagu, declared the meeting open at 10.38am. Prof. G. C. E. Duruamaku-Dim, Department of Vocational and Special Education, offered the opening prayer.
MINUTE UCS/208/3.00 – CHAIRMAN’S BRIEFING
The Chairman welcomed members to the meeting. He apologized for the delay in convening regular meetings of Senate. He attributed this to the fire incident which engulfed the Senate Chambers. He added that a panel of enquiry had since been set-up to look into the remote and immediate causes of the fire as well as to make recommendations on how to put back the Chamber to use.
UCS/208/3.01 – Research/Quality Assurance
The Chairman informed members that the Directorate of Research and Quality Assurance had introduced a feedback mechanism for internal assessment of staff productivity. Hesaid that the mechanism would involve the useof questionnaire which would be administered on inter-departmental and Faculty basis by the Directorate for ranking and accreditation of academic programmes and staff appraisal. The introduction of the mechanism was approved by Senate.
UCS/208/3.02 – Teaching Technique/Work Ethics Workshop
As part of his administrative efforts toward the attainment of academic and administrative excellence in the University, the Chairman directed the Centre for Teaching and Learning Excellence to organize a workshop on teaching techniques and work ethics for academic staff. He stressed that the workshop should be extended to non-teaching staff. He emphasized that the issue of curriculum expansion should urgently be looked into in order to fast-track the teaching and learning excellence strategy of the University.
UCS/208/3.03 – Introduction of Asian Studies
The Chairman briefed members on his courtesy visit to the South Korean Ambassador to Nigeria, during which a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) was signed between the Korean government and the University of Calabar on the establishment and funding of Centre for Korean Studies to be domiciled in the Bassey AndahInstitute for African and Asian Studies.
