Assigned Motif:

The Odyssey-Motifs

A motif is an object or idea that recurs often in a work of literature. Through their repetition and placement in a work of literature, motifs can contribute to the author’s intended theme.

Your task is to find an article on your assigned motif and explain its relevance in ancient Greek culture (consult the databases). Write down an explanation of what you find.

Once you have a grasp of your motif, find evidence of that motif as it is shown in The Odyssey. The more evidence you collect, the better prepared you will be for a future writing assignment which will ask you to consider all the information.

Example:

Motif: Honoring the Gods

Explanation: (consult an article you find on your assigned motif and write what you learn about the presence of this motif in The Odyssey)

Evidence: (find direct quotes from The Odyssey which show your motif -- your goal should be to collect as many references to it as possible)
