SOCIAL STUDIES POWER STANDARDS OF THIS COURSE:

Social Studies Standard 1: Students will understand the process of how humans develop, learn, adapt to the environment, and internalize their culture.

Social Studies Standard 2: Students will understand how human factors and the distribution of resources affect the development society and the movement of populations.

Social Studies Standard 3: Students will understand historical patterns, periods of time, and the relationships among these elements.

Social Studies Standard 4: Students will understand cause and effect relationships and other historical thinking skills in order to interpret events and issues.

Social Studies Standard 5: Students will understand how to use textual evidence to support analysisof what the text says and draw inferences from the text.

Social Studies Standard 6: Students will understand and apply social studies vocabulary.

TEACHING MATERIALS:

  • TCI History Alive! The Ancient World

ASSIGNMENT EXPECTATIONS:

  • Class work time will usually be provided with the rest of the assignment to be finished out of class and due on the assigned date.
  • These assignments will either be checked or reviewed in class or turned in to the class bin.
  • Daily assignments are used to reinforce and practice social studies standards, so completion on assigned dates is vital for understanding.

STUDENT MATERIALS:

  • Students need to bring their social studies folder, pencil, red pen, highlighter, agenda, and silent reading book to class daily. It will be specified which days students need scissors, colored pencils, markers, or glue sticks/tape.

GRADING GUIDELINES:

  1. Entries in the grade book that count towards the final grade will be limited to course or grade level standards
  2. Extra credit will not be given at any time.
  3. Students will be allowed multiple opportunities to demonstrate their understanding of classroom standards in various ways. Retakes and revisions will be allowed.
  4. Student grade book entries will be determined by multiple points of data. The entries will be a reflection of the most recent performance.
  5. Students will be provided multiple opportunities to practice standards independently through homework or other class work. Practice assignments and activities will be consistent with classroom standards for the purpose of providing feedback. Practice assignmentswill not be included as part of the final grade.
  • Late assignments– Course work that is late and/or unfinished will ultimately affect the student’s understanding of the social studies skills.
  • Re-assessments – A student will have the opportunity to retake assessments in order to improve his/her understanding of the skills. In order to reassess, the student must have completed all practice assignments leading up to the assessment. In addition, before any re-assessment can be taken, the student must attend a practice session set up by the teacher and must provide documentation of additional work that is done to practice and learn the skill(s) that the student is not understanding.
  • PowerSchool – Student performance will be recorded through PowerSchool. This is available to students and parents.

MAKE-UP WORK PROCEDURES:

  • Planned absence – In advance of a planned absence (doctor’s appointment, family event, vacation, etc.), a student needs to pick up his/her purple assignment sheet from his/her HOMEBASE teacher so that assignments can be written down for the planned absence. If possible, the work should be turned in before the student leaves. If it is not turned in before the student leaves, it is due when the student returns to school.
  • Unexpected absence -When students are gone unexpectedly (illness, family emergency, etc) he/she will receive a purple assignment sheet on which all assignments have been recorded.It is up to the student to seek additional help for the assignments, if needed, and then hand in the assignment(s) within two days of returning to school.

OTHER:

  • All classroom work and activities will be updated weekly and posted on teacher websites. All 6th grade assignments are posted in a Google Calendar that you and your child can subscribe to.
