JOB TITLE: Sessional Gym / Group exercise Instructor

SALARY: £13 per hour (4 hrs per week)

RESPONSIBLE TO: Community Centre Co-ordinator

ACCOUNTABLE TO: Director through the Community Centre Co-ordinator

DATE: June 2016

Probationary period: 3 months

JOB PURPOSE

To carry out gym inductions and fitness classes to community service users. To offer advice to gym users to enhance their fitness, health and wellbeing.

Main Duties and responsibilities:

As a Gym instructor within the Community Centre you will be required to carry out the following duties in the context of Cadder Housing Associations policies and practices, particularly Equality and Diversity, Health and Safety and Data Protection:

·  To support gym users requiring advice and guidance on equipment use and exercise plans.

·  Assess gym users PARQ forms and medical advice notes and advice users of exercise accordingly.

·  Ensure that all required paperwork, membership forms, PARQ forms, are completed.

·  Deliver a range of fitness and exercise classes and taster sessions for community members

·  Work alongside other community centre staff, volunteers and partners when required.

1.0  Introduction

1.1 Cadder Housing Association is a Registered Social Landlord and a Registered Scottish Charity and was formed in 1994 and evolved through two housing stock transfers in 1994 and 1998 from Scottish Homes. We now own 652 properties and provide a factoring service to 400 owner occupiers in the area.

1.2 Cadder has a healthy mix of tenement and main door properties in the area, although these are manly three and four apartment properties, thus giving the Association and many of our tenants particular challenges with the ‘bedroom tax’ through the Government’s Welfare Reforms.

1.3 The Association aims to continue the regeneration of Cadder where we have almost completed building a new community centre and have development aspirations for vacant sites in Cadder to build housing to meet the needs of our tenants and applicants to our housing list, which will aim to provide a greater balance in the range of property types and sizes in Cadder.

1.4 The new Community Centre provides a facility with a full range of programmes, activities, services and activities that will meet the needs, aspirations and wants of local residents. A key objective is for the Community Centre to be viable and sustainable in the long term maximising both community and commercial use of the centre.

1.5 Cadder has embraced employability providing employment opportunities in estate caretaking, painting and clerical and administrations positions to long term unemployed people thGlasgow. Our Training Academy started in 2005 and we have provided more than 250 work and training placements and apprenticeships during this period. In a recent study of our estate caretaking and employability initiative, it was stated that, ‘Cadder was punching above its weight in its contribution to the local employment agenda’.

2.0  Post of Gym Instructor / Group Exercise Instructor

2.1 The post of Gym Instructor/Group Exercise Instructor is a key role within the operation of Cadder Community Centre.

2.2 The successful candidate should preferably possess First Aid certificate, and have a range of experience in delivering fitness classes. You should have a good knowledge of current Health & Safety Legislation and Safe manual Handling.

2.3 You should have experience in a gym environment or similar and be able to carry out gym inductions and provide guidance and advice on gym equipment usage. You will be expected to undertake your role to the customer and Association’s satisfaction. You must be able to work to deadlines; be customer focused and be able to communicate effectively with a range of stakeholders. You should be able to work on your own initiative or as part of a team, be conscientious; be flexible in your approach to meet organisational goals; and have a pleasant friendly manner.

2.4 The post will be based in the Cadder Community Centre and the hours of work will be approx. 4 hours per week and will cover 1 morning session and 1 evening session per week. There may be a requirement on occasions to undertake additional hours to meet organisational needs and deadlines. There will also be requests for occasional weekend shifts to cover special events.

2.5 Cadder Housing Association is a full member of the Employer in Voluntary Housing (EVH) and operated salary scales and conditions of service, which have been agreed by EVH on behalf of member organisations and the Unite Union (Formerly T&GWU).

2.6 The terms and conditions for the Community Centre Operative are as listed:

i.  The salary for this post £13.00 per hour

ii.  Defined contribution pension scheme.
