Preservatives and pigments for the coatings industry

Leverkusen – At the Eurocoat trade fair, due to take place from September 30 to October 2 in Lyon, France, the LANXESS specialty chemicals group will showcase its premium products for the paints and coatings industry. Highlights will include new Preventol industrial preservatives, inorganic Bayferrox iron oxide pigments and chrome oxide pigments.

The proven products in the Preventol range, which are used for the in-can preservation of water-borne paints as well as for the formulation of fungicidal and/or algicidal coating systems, help to guard against any problems caused by micro-organisms.

The in-can preservatives prevent contamination through germs – especially bacteria, fungi and yeasts – in liquid, water-borne products and offer a broad spectrum of microbicidal activity. They are also extremely economical to use. Five new Preventol formulations based on isothiazolinone derivatives are available for in-can preservation, all of them free of volatile organic compounds (VOC) and formaldehyde. In the prescribed dosage, nearly all these products comply with the "Blue Angel" criteria to RAL UZ-102 for low-emission wall paints.

Dry-film preservatives maintain the aesthetic value and physical integrity of a coating, which is essential for retaining key properties in paints, coatings and plasters such as water resistance and substrate adhesion. The new VOC-free grade Preventol A 22-D, an aqueous dispersion based on zinc pyrithione, octylisothiazolinone and diuron, is a synergistic active ingredient combination with both fungicidal and algicidal action. The balanced formulation permits highly effective film preservation, while taking best advantage of the scope allowed by the labeling restrictions as regards the active ingredients.

The innovative VOC-free Preventol A 24, a solution with fungicidal action based on 3-iodo-2-propynyl butylcarbamate (IPBC) and octylisothiazolinone, is characterized by its particularly high active ingredient content and outstanding processing properties (low viscosity) and is thus particularly economical. In addition, the undesired incorporation of ancillary substances such as emulsifiers into the coating formulation can be minimized.

"We can provide our customers with the benefits of over 100 years of experience,” says Peter Weinmar, head of the Material Protection Products business unit. “Backed by the technical expertise we have acquired during this period and our experience with regulatory matters, we can provide optimum service, also with regard to registrations. In view of the various amendments to the regulations – the European biocides directive and the Fifra registrations in the United States, for example – we will also be in an excellent position to provide support in the future," he added.

In Lyon, the Inorganic Pigments business unit will showcase the high-performance pigments from its proven Bayferrox product line, such as Bayferrox 360, an iron oxide black that combines high tinting strength with a bluish black color shade which is particularly popular in the coatings industry. Special yellow pigments from the high-performance range, such as Bayferrox 3910 LV and Bayferrox 915, enable the formulation of low-viscosity pigment preparations as required by the tinting systems industry. Last but not least, heat-stable yellow pigments from the Colortherm range and black and brown pigments are of particular interest for coil coating and powder coating applications because of their special properties. Dr. Volker Schneider, head of the Competence Center Paints of LANXESS’s Inorganic Pigments business unit, says: "We focus on our premium products that enable customers to adjust their formulations exactly to the relevant requirements in practice."
