Section I: Student and Student Service Policies

STUDENT MINERJOBS REGISTRATION

To participate in on-campus interviews, COER services and be eligible to use MinerJobs, the student must be enrolled as a degree seeking student (undergraduate or graduate student) at Missouri S&T. To maintain an active account in MinerJobs all students MUST register each semester. The registration process consists of creating or updating the student profile in MinerJobs each semester.

Undergraduate Students

·  Students must be within three semesters of graduation to participate in on-campus interviews for full-time employment (summer is counted as one of the semesters regardless of whether the student attends school during that summer).

·  Students can register with COER as a first semester Freshman using their high school GPA for their first semester ONLY.

·  Students MUST complete two semesters at Missouri S&T before going out on a co-op position unless they are a transfer student.

A waiver form can be obtained should a second semester freshman have an employment opportunity. The employer, academic advisor and department chair must sign this waiver form.

·  Undergraduate students admitted to graduate school at Missouri S&T, may seek co-op or summer employment. Verification must be provided by the student that they are accepted to graduate school. Their user profile must contain the current graduation date, not the expected graduate (MS) graduation date. If the student is not admitted to the Missouri S&T graduate program, they have to register as seeking full-time employment.

Graduate Students

·  A graduate student who has an undergraduate degree from Missouri S&T may participate in on-campus interviews for full-time at the Master’s level when they are within three semesters of graduation.

·  If the bachelor’s degree, or previous degree, is from another school, the student must have completed ONE semester of graduate course work at Missouri S&T before participating in on-campus interviews.

·  International graduate students must complete nine (9) months of course work at Missouri S&T before they are eligible to work as stipulated by INS and Missouri S&T International and Cultural Affairs.

Distance Education Students

·  Students participating in the distance education program, as a degree seeking student at Missouri S&T, may utilize COER services AFTER verification has been made through the registrar’s office. Students will be registered based on their graduation date of the current degree they are seeking.

Certificate Students

·  To participate in on-campus interviews and be eligible to use MinerJobs, the student must be enrolled as a degree seeking student (undergraduate or graduate student) at Missouri S&T. If a student is seeking a certificate only, they would NOT be eligible to participate in on-campus interviews or MinerJobs.

Alumni

·  An undergraduate or graduate student who has been conferred a Missouri S&T degree may participate in on-campus interviews and use MinerJobs for two semesters following graduation at the student level. After two semesters, the alumnus is no longer eligible for the student level services and must register as an alumnus ($60.00 per year fee) for alumni services; which include resume referrals, access to career fair and employer lists prior to the event, access to the “JOBS” posted in MinerJobs and access to other employment resource sites.

·  If an alumnus is currently seeking another degree (from Missouri S&T) their level of service is based upon their current graduation date (i.e. they can’t be dual registered with COER).

·  Alumni (regardless of graduation date) may interview on-campus if an employer from the career fair puts him/her on an interview schedule. Coordination must be made with the appropriate Recruiting Assistant.

·  Alumni are eligible for the following services without registering with COER:

o  Career Fair

o  Job search or career related questions to an advisor

o  Recommended internet job search resources

o  Career Guide

o  Going Global

o  Suit Closet

o  Workshops

o  Etiquette Dinner (separate charge)

·  Alumni who register with COER are eligible for the services listed for those not registered AND the following services:

o  Access to MinerJobs

o  On-line resume referral

o  On-campus interviews

o  Practice interviews (up to 4 per year)

o  Resume and cover letter reviews (5 per year via phone, email or in person)

o  Advisor appointments (5, 1-hour appointments)

COOPERATIVE EDUCATION PROGRAM

The Missouri University of Science and Technology's Cooperative Education Program is designed to provide students an employment opportunity to gain practical degree-related, work experience prior to graduation. The program is set up so students can take a break from studies and work full-time for one or for a combination of semesters such as spring/summer or summer/fall, allowing 8-9 months of work experience vs. the 3 summer months for internship positions.

Co-op Registration Fee

·  Co-op Work Program Fee:

o  Students will be charged one set fee for Spring/Summer, Summer/Fall, Spring, and Fall co-op registrations. This fee will cost the equivalent of one in-state, undergraduate credit hour, regardless of residency and degree standing, PLUS a $100 Co-op Processing fee. The amount will be adjusted annually with tuition changes. Currently, (SP 17) the cost is $276.50 + $100 = $376.50. The fee covers recording of the non-credit co-op experience on the student’s transcript for a spring or fall semester. It will NOT be recorded for the summer semester

·  Co-op Course for Credit

o  Co-op Faculty Advisor approval required. 1-3 credit hours of 2000/3000-level department credit awarded. Each academic department has different ways of approving the co-op course for credit. When elected, cost is according to standard credit hour rates for the student. A $100 Co-op Processing fee is administered for Spring and Fall semesters only.

·  It is Missouri S&T policy that students are not away from their studies for a full academic year unless prior authorization is given by the academic department, the employer and COER.

Co-op Paperwork

·  All students accepting a co-op position with an employer must complete the online registration through MinerJobs required by COER. This consists of the student logging into MinerJobs, selecting “Report a Co-op Hire,” filling out required fields, and uploading the student’s job offer letter. Additionally, an employer agreement may be requested if one is not already on file with COER. By registering their co-op this will ensure the student maintains their current student status with Missouri S&T.

Student Eligibility

·  Freshmen After first two semesters (a waiver form can be

obtained should a second semester freshman have an employment opportunity. The employer, academic advisor and department chair must sign this waiver form)

·  Transfer Immediately eligible (assuming 30 credit hours

were completed at their previous institution).

·  Graduate (M.S./Ph.D) After completing one semester (unless

undergraduate degree is from Missouri S&T)

·  *International After completing 9 months of studies and with

advisor approval

*International students are eligible to apply for up to 12 months of Curricular Practical Training (CPT) which allows them to accept internship or co-op positions prior to graduation. CPT is approved and issued by the Missouri S&T International and Cultural Affairs Office, and can be processed within one week.

INTERNSHIPS

Internships are not required to be registered with COER, but are strongly encouraged. Internship is qualified as May-August employment, not attached to a semester (as in co-op). Internships can be reported online by clicking on the appropriate link on the following webpage: http://career.mst.edu/forms/. Internships are not currently eligible for credit.

PART-TIME ON/OFF CAMPUS JOB POSTINGS

Effective August 2012 COER is responsible for posting part-time on/off campus student job opportunities. All part-time opportunities received by COER will be posted in MinerJobs. When an employer or campus department has a part-time position available, they should email a copy of the job description along with appropriate contact information to Julie Mayfield , Recruiting Assistant. Employers can also contact the COER office at 573-341-4343 for further information regarding job postings.

In order for students to view the part-time positions they must update their profile in MinerJobs and elect to view part-time opportunities under the “Applicant Type.” Once the student’s account has been activated, they can locate the active part-time opportunities in MinerJobs by logging in to the system and viewing the “Part-Time On Campus” or “Part-Time Off Campus” listings under the “Jobs” tab. Students should be sure to follow the application instructions given in the job description to apply.

WORK AUTHORIZATION POLICY

An individual registering with COER is required to provide accurate information regarding work authorization. For example, one should not select Permanent Resident if one is on an F1, H1 or J1 Visa. Any misrepresentation of work authorization will result in restriction of registration and interviewing privileges, meaning the individual will be taken off any interview schedule(s) and will have no access to COER services, until the individual attends a meeting with the COER Associate Director. Pending the outcome of the meeting, the Associate Director may terminate registration and interviewing privileges for the remainder of the semester.
