Bafra

The area of Bafra is located on the north-eastern ‘panhandle’ of the North Cyprus coastline, an area which stretches from the ancient town of Famagusta to the northern-most tip of Cyprus. This substantial area is known locally quite simply as ‘Cyprus’ paradise’, and is widely recognized as being one of the most unspoiled places anywhere in the Med. Virtually undeveloped, the area is home to a diverse range of wildlife, flora and fauna; its coastline features some of the most beautiful, idyllic beaches and scenery in North Cyprus. A reasonable distance (around 1 hour by car) from the more touristic area of Girne (Kyrenia) – and a short 40 minute drive from both Ercan and Larnaca airports – the Karpaz Peninsular is nonetheless busy in its own, quieter way, with the area around the village of Bafra being a particular point of investor interest.Investments made jointly from the private sector and the government in the Bafra region are designed to boost tourism in the area. Plans for no less than 12 five star hotels and casinos, a shopping centre and enlarged desalination facilities will make this into the ‘Las Vegas’ of the Eastern Mediterranean’. The hotels will be designed along various themes with such names as The Hanging Gardens of Babylon, The Coliseum, The Artimisia Temple, Noah’s Ark etc. The 750 bed Kaya Artemis and the 1250bed Noah’s Ark Hotel are already open This touristic development is just a 5 minute drive from the bungalow in Çayirova.

Iskele

The town of Iskele, also known as Yeni Iskele, is located on the south east coastal area of Northern Cyprus and on the main road which heads towards the KarpazPeninsula area. It’s close to the harbour town of Boğaz, which is a very pretty old fishing village that still retains some of its authenticity whilst also being able to accommodate tourism. In the centre of Iskele you will find a small Dominican chapel called Ayios Iakovos, which was originally built around the 15th century and on the outskirts of Iskele the church of Panayia Theotokos, a 12th century domed building which has been restored in recent years and reopened to the public as an Icon Museum. Most of the icons in the church are from fairly modern times and from all over the Island. Iskele is also the venue for some important regional festivals ın North Cyprus such as the Iskele International Folk Dance Festival, normally held in June every year, featuring visiting nations competing for the best folk dance group title; and also the Iskele Festival which is held yearly in June/July time, and which hosts competitions, displays and plenty of outdoor cooking! The Largest village in Northern Cyprus Iskele is a well serviced village having a large selection of shops several banks, a clinic and municipal offices, with a weekly market selling local produce and household items.

Bogaz

Bogaz is located at the gateway to the Karpaz Peninsular. It is a working harbour, and is a delightful mix of both Europeans and local Turkish Cypriots. It has many restaurants and cozy bars, and is a delightful meeting place for all. Daily trips out to sea are offered by local boat owners where you can chance your luck with catching your own dinner. ErcanAirport can be reached within 40 minutes or so, and the historic city of Famagusta is a short drive along the scenic coastal road heading west. Bogaz offers a unique atmosphere in Cyprus, and is becoming a popular choice for both holiday and permanent residences. Around the harbour can be found a first class selection of restaurants and bars where one can enjoy a pleasant drink or a meal as you survey the activities in the harbour or watch the sparkling waters of the Mediterranean lap onto the beach.

The Karpaz Area

I believe it is best discribe the Karpaz area as two regions from Bogaz to Yenierenkoy and Yenierenkoy to the tip. Between Bogaz and Yenierenkoy the terrain is less rugged and the area is populated with a sprinkling of villages, and Farming communities, the main villages being Mehmetcik, Bafra and Kumyali. Mehmetcik sits high on a hillside and has the most spectacular views of the picturesque valley below with the sea in the distance. The village is famous for its grape growing and the production of an assortment of traditional sweets made from grape juice. Bafra until recently was a small sleepy farming community, now it is a hive of activity with 2 large 5 star hotels built on the magnificent sandy beach, with more hotels planned it is set to become the Las Vagas of Northern Cyprus. Kumyali is an unspoilt, coastal village with a small fishing harbour and sandy beach. Surrounded by Olive groves and orchards it is in one of the prettiest settings. Although it is in a rural position, close by there are two supermarkets and a petrol station, there is a choice of excellent restaurants along the main road that by passes the village. The next village that you will come to is Yesilkoy translated means ‘green village’, famous for its market gardens and produces of the yam like vegetable kolokas.Yenierenkoy is a large village, once the centre of the thriving and lucrative tobacco industrystill very evident are the factories, packing houses With its narrow winding streets dotted with coffee shops and markets Yenierenkoy is a pleasant rambling village, the small tourist office is open in the summer months. In stark contrast a few kilometers along the coast is the brand new state of the art Karpaz Gate Marina with berthing for 350 yachts and all the facilities that the yachting fraternity requires.

The Karpaz Pennisular

There are still areas of Cyprus that have remained virtually unchanged for hundreds of years, and the Karpaz Peninsularis one of them. Only the passage of time has left tell-tale marks upon the terrain and the shoreline. For thousands of years this island has been inhabited, and hidden amongst the densely packed undergrowth that covers the hillsides are the remains of past civilisations. Take a journey into the Karpaz Peninsula to discover for yourself areas that still have the essence of ancient Cyprus. Where you will see the donkeys roaming freely and shepherds grazing their flocks of sheep and goats amidst the stunning countryside. A vast array of Beaches of golden sand can be found on the north and south coasts. Some are easy to find as they may have a small hotel nearby but others have to be searched for. There are few signposts to the sea and part of the adventure is seeking out the smaller, deserted bays where the crystal water gently laps the shore, and the only company you will find will be a the occasional sea bird. Dipkarpaz is the only large village in the area and the only village where Greek and Turkish Cypriots live side by side. For them, the political strife was something they preferred not to get involved with. They continue to farm and bring up their families, in a way of life that stays resolutely stuck in a time warp. It is worth taking the time to explore the Karpazandthere are a few small hotels offering comfortable accommodation or for the adventurous there is a selection of basic beach huts available. The pace of life is slow so when you visit the Karpaz don’t be in a hurry, and prepare yourself for a relaxing break from the grind of modern life.

Karpaz Gate Marina

As if that were not enough the new Karpaz Gate Marina is now open and operational. Located just north of the village of Yeni Erenkoy and just 20 minutes away from the Mehmetcik area. It is large enough for 350 plus vessels, including Super Yachts of over 65 meters. Restrictions on sailing along the territorial waters of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus have now been lifted which means yachts will sail to this new and almost only available berthing spot in the Eastern Mediterranean. This will further add value to properties and investments in the area and act as a money magnet with the super-rich bringing their yachts and wanting to explore the region
