A Classroom Tale: How best can this be used? Please tell us what you think

PUPIL CENTRED

It could be a great starting point in discussion with the students on what works best for them. (Teacher)

Pupils presenting animation to their teachers, parents. As an adult this gave me a very fresh perspective. Also policymakers! (Research officer, CCEA)

As a starter to discussion on assessment. Brill. Well done. Funny - appealing. It’s ok to say I don’t understand. (Head of Alternative Education SEELB)

Best use to start a discussion between pupils and teachers about learning - and barriers. (Teacher)

As a stimulus in schools to promote discussion between teachers and pupils about assessment and learning. (Teacher)

A mechanism to show pupils how they feel in a teacher-pupil relationship. It is an eye-opener and quite chilling if learning is not pupil-centred.

Useful to generate discussion with teachers and pupils how effectively assessment is being used to support learning. (ELB)

To stimulate discussion in staffrooms and classrooms on how to improve students’ learning experiences (CASS officer)

Initiate discussion on how pupils feel about their learning. How they teach impacts - emotionally, physically, academically. (Advisor)

It emphasizes the need to harmonize teaching and learning and assessment. Teacher empathy with pupils learning processes. At the systems level - policymakers need to stop and think. (Education officer)

I think this will be an excellent clip to show teachers about miscommunication - also to show pupils in explaining we are here to help - NOT to worry. (Assessment coordinator, Senior Leadership Team)

Shown to both students and teachers to show how pupils may feel. (Pupil)

It can show how students feel and gives teachers insight into students thoughts. (Pupil)

TEACHER TRAINING / CPD

Within teacher training. (Researcher)

A good primer for discussion as part of in-service training on A4L/ALTM. (Education advisor)

I think it should be adapted for students and teachers as a learning and teaching tool. It could be used to provoke discussion around the topic of learning and teaching. (Teacher)

Could be a great tool for whole staff discussions in school. Useful reminder that because something has been explained / presented does not mean it has been understood AND a reminder about children’s anxiety (Exams administrator)

I feel this would be useful for reflection on the pupils’ perspective of assessment - departmental discussion and actions. (Principal)

This could be shown at teacher meetings before the start of the school year with discussion groups on how it impacts their assessment that year. (Teacher)

This can be used better within staff training and to encourage dialogue with students. Excellent starting point. (Teacher)

For teachers: to help stimulate discussion and raise awareness of how to empathize with pupils’ learning needs. For pupils: to understand that it’s alright to ask for help. (Retired principal, now educational mentor, commentator and advisor)

MORE BROADLY

It can be used in different ways for different audiences. Useful for parents too at parent teacher meetings. Reminds us how it feels to be the ‘student’. Could be used with our educators in NGO. (Education advisor)

An authentic expression of local pupils’ experiences of assessment to be shared with educators and other adults. (Teacher educator)

It would be very useful in considering the impact of struggling with learning on learners i.e. lack of sleep etc. (Lecturer)

OTHER

I see it as more of an ongoing process than that portrayed in the film. All the time the teacher scans for lack of understanding. It’s about good practice. (Past principal, current lecturer in education)

Pupil was very stressed. Only when she was pressurized to produce a homework did the problem become apparent to the teacher. If this is indicative of ‘where we are’ then we still have a long way to go! We must educate the pupils in how to use the tools in AfL. (Teacher)

The message was unclear to me. If I switch off in class and don’t do my homework the teacher won’t mind and will reteach it to me? (Teacher)

Not sure. I’d be a bit concerned the clip sends out the message that it’s ok not to concentrate in class because the teacher will then give you a one-to-one session. (Teacher)
