Description: This series was written specifically to support Western and Northern Canada Protocol Common Curriculum Framework for Mathematics learning outcomes and strands at grades 7, 8, 9
*Some instructional adjustment for grade 9 is necessary as several topics and outcomes exceed Saskatchewan Learning curricular expectations for grade nine program of studies : applying square roots; solving inequalities; factoring expressions with common factors; factoring trinomials/differences of squares/special products; rational expressions; right triangles and tangent ratio/sine ratio/cosine ratio/solving right triangles; locus
Student Texts are organized into chapters that relate to topics from the strands. Each chapter starts with an introductory activity followed by questions and activities that enable students to build, practice, apply, and extend learning. Logos indicate estimating, writing, thinking, and cooperative group activities. Manipulatives are used and technology suggestions show students how to apply technology, including calculators and computers, to solve problems.
Teacher’s Edition: This contains teaching suggestions to introduce concepts, as well as reinforcement, extension, enrichment, and assessment strategies. Step-by-step lesson plans accompany the student text. A data bank, answers, and a glossary are provided. Alternate chapter checks and assessment masters give variations for evaluation and review. Teacher’s Edition masters provide materials such as grid and dot paper, number lines, alge-tiles, tangrams, spinners, geometric shapes, and nets.
Modified Mathpower 7, 8, 9 Western Edition
Developed as teacher resource packages in 2001 to supplement the textbook series and organized to parallel the chapters and lessons in the Math Power Western Edition Grades 7, 8, 9 Teacher Resource and student textbooks.
This program is adaptive rather than modified because all WNCP (Western Northern Canada Protocol for Mathematics) outcomes at each grade level are covered in the modified program, only the appearance of the resource has been adapted to include more white space on the page with less extraneous language and students can do the work on the page rather than having to move from book to sheet to write down answers. Allows all students to work out of the core textbook at some point. Modified Math power Grades 7, 8, 9 material can be used after whole class instruction for all students to provide guided practice before moving onto the textbooks.
