Process wool grease

Purpose This unit standard is for people working in the wool scouring industry. People credited with this unit standard are able to prepare and use a wool grease recovery system to recover wool grease, identify problems in the operation of the equipment, produce product to the required quality, carry out minor maintenance and maintain records as required.

Elements and performance criteria
Element 1
Prepare drums and grease storage tank.
Performance criteria
1.1 Drums and tanks are prepared for use according to workplace practice.
Range cleaned internally to remove all contaminants and impurities, labels and identification from previous use are removed, damaged drums removed from stock.
Element 2
Separate grease by thermal cracking.
Performance criteria
2.1 Process conditions are monitored and maintained according to work instructions and workplace practice.
Range temperature, time.
2.2 Grease is run-off to separator and/or bulk storage tank or drums according to workplace practice and work instructions.
Element 3
Process grease in a separator.
Performance criteria
3.1 Separator is assembled and checked according to machinery manufacturer’s instructions.
Range cleanliness of parts, oil level, vibration free, no liquor leaks.
3.2 Flows and pumps are started according to operating procedures.
3.3 Equipment is monitored and adjustments made to ensure plant is operating to workplace requirements.
Range feed, liquor temperatures, pump operation.
3.4 Grease flow to bulk storage tank or drum is monitored and feed rate to the separator is adjusted to maintain grease quality.
Element 4
Take samples, record production, and mark drums.
Performance criteria
4.1 Production and related information recorded according to plant practice.
4.2 Drums are marked and weighed according to work instruction.
4.3 Samples of grease are taken and graded to industry specification.

Providers must be accredited by NZQA, or an inter-institutional body with delegated authority for quality assurance, before they can report credits from assessment against unit standards or deliver courses of study leading to that assessment.
Industry Training Organisations must be accredited by NZQA before they can register credits from assessment against unit standards.
Accredited providers and Industry Training Organisations assessing against unit standards must engage with the moderation system that applies to those standards.
