Assignment topics for Managerial Communication

Module 1 : Introduction

1.  Is the ability to communicate more important to the successful performance of a supervisor, than to the successful performance of a company president? Defend your answer

2.  Describe the network of communication in an organisation which you are familiar . Discuss and explain.

3.  Give an example of a word or phrases used in business and in the news, or in our general culture and explain why it can be constructed in several ways depending on the interpreters point of view.

Module 2 : Oral Communication

1.  Recall any of the conversations in which you participated. Did you reflect your partner’s feeling during the conversation? If so, how did you do that? If not discuss why you did not.

2.  Recall any of the conversation in which you participated as a listener and describe that how did you communicate to the speaker that you were listening.

Module 3: Written Communication

1.  Write a clear and effective business message of about 100 words for each of the situation below:

a.  The vice president of a business firm is impressed by the report submitted by her sales manager. Hence, she sends email message appreciating the efforts of the manager.

b.  You are the senior manager, HR, of your company. You are away from Mumbai for important conference in Delhi. Just the day before you plan to return, you receive an important assignment at Dehradun. Now draft a message to be sent to the chairman of your company.

Module 4: Business Letters and reports

  1. Write a persuasive letter to your customer to buy your product.
  2. Write a rejection/ refusal letter for the same as a customer.
  3. Assume the role of HR manager in your company. You feel the need for introducing a refresher program for the secretaries of all managers. You need funds for running this programme. Prepare the proposal for the same.

Module 5: Case method of Learning

  1. A case will be given to the students and will be asked to solve the case.

Module 6 : Presentation and Negotiation Skills

1.  Assume that you must prepare the speech on the importance of making good grads for an audience of college students. Develop some attention –gaining ideas for the introduction of this speech. Do the same for a climactic close for the speech.

2.  One’s manner of dress, choice of hairstyle, physical characteristics and the like are personal. They should have no influence on Presentation. Discuss.

Module 7 : Employment Communication & Impact of Technology

  1. List 5 text messaging shortcuts (B4, BTW, B2U) that you use or know of along with your meaning. Then ask 5 different people to tell you what each shortcut means. Write a short report of your results.
  2. What can we expect to see in future technological developments that will affect business communication?
  3. Find a newspaper article about negotiation between two parties. Explain the situation and the process of negotiation and conclusions reached.

Module 8 Group Communication

1.  You are the CEO of Johnson & Johnson. In a recent press release, reports of your baby powder has been released. It was stated that on lab investigations, cancer causing chemicals were found in your product. You are required to mange media. Explain how you will do it.
