It has back been a summer of change and mixed weather. Bob Hart, club president, had to take a short leave of office to undergo back surgery. Surgery went well, he is a bit ahead of schedule on his recovery and back at the helm as president.

Tommy Goodson, vice president and interim president during Bob’s down time did another fantastic job of directing the White River Run. Tommy and Lori seem to keep improving this run for the better each year. And as we all know, the director needs a great volunteer staff and Tommy has a good group to assist him.

Carolyn McKinney is doing a fine job of keeping the membership updated through ARRC News briefings. Her pictures are a nice addition also.

Due to flooding from a week of downpours, the Thursday Night Points race on 10 July was cancelled. Apparently the damage to the path was minimal. Runners and walkers were devising new routes, much like winter running, due to all the water on the normal paths and trails.

This is the second issue of the PACER being sent electronically. If you know of someone who is not getting a PACER and does not have access to e-mail, please have them contact Robin Gerhart or Greg Smith. Current copies are available to members without e-mail addresses at the Thursday Night Point Races.

Notes for the present…

Louie Harshman, former Anderson Road Runner, now living in Tennessee completed his 50 states and Washington, D.C. marathon quest. The Mayor’s Midnight Sun Marathon held on 21 June 2003, in Anchorage, Alaska was his 50th state to run a marathon. Accompanying Louie on his final marathon were Lonnie Smith, Terry Spoo and Jim Hoffman. Not far behind Louie in this quest for 50 states and D.C. are our own: Terry Spoo, Lonnie Smith, Jack Stepp and Tony Martin. Congratulations Louie! And keep going ARRC guys.

Thank you to those who have supported our Thursday Night Point races with race awards. It’s the little extras from those extra-good members that make our club one of the best. Speaking of best…give Bob Kearns a word of thanks for once again marking the path, even in 1/8 mile increments for those wanting to time shorter sprints. Not to mention the fine job Bob is doing as race director for the Thursday Night Point races. Don’t forget his sweet wife, Elsie who is always on hand at the finish line passing out sticks.

Interested in becoming a “Friend of the Children’s Fun Run?” Contact Frankie St. Phillips for more information. The Fun Run is free to any child 0-12 years old, however, the cost of ribbons, prizes and refreshments come at a cost. Please consider a monetary donation or contribution to the refreshments/prizes. This is our best year ever for attendance. With our members and community sponsors this event will continue to grow and develop our future runners.

Bob Hart recently heard from former member Scott Walschlager. Scott is now president of the Sioux Falls, SD Area Running Club. The club has 93 members. Scott recently ran Grandma’s Marathon in 2:40. He says “hi” to everyone.

Thank you, Jim Hunter, owner and operator of Blimpie’ s Subs and Salads for inviting the Anderson Road Runners to enjoy all your tasty fare after the Points Races. If you like a Rueben sandwich, Tommy Goodson reports “they’re the best!”
