Staff Management Skills

Appraisal Checklist

Staff Development Unit
GD 11 Technopark Ext. 6210

To be completed by appraisee and
used as the basis for discussion during appraisal

What the staff management skills checklist is for

This checklist is designed to be used to help identify an appraisee’s management skill areas and skill gap areas. These can then be focussed on in the appraisal process in order to plan staff development activities that may be appropriate.

This checklist is not intended to be a precise diagnostic tool, but rather a way in which the broad areas in which development might be required are identified.

The skill levels are banded. You will probably not fit exactly into these bands but should choose one that fits your own skill profile best.

How to complete the checklist

The checklist is divided into sections. In each section you have to choose the described level of skill that:

a) best matches your current level of skill
b) best describes the level of skill you think would be ideal for your particular job.

The skill levels are based on identified key skill levels and may not exactly match your own skill set. Please choose the two levels that are nearest to describing
(a) your current and (b) your ideal skill level.

Do not feel that you have to state that you have skills in all areas, as some may not be appropriate or necessary for your job. If a particular area is one that you know nothing about and you do not need to know anything about it in your job, please answer that you “do not have skills in that area” as both your skill level now and as your ideal skill level.

Please answer as accurately as possible.

Please answer all sections.
