Vision

Child Advocates strives to ensure that the children we represent and advocate for: (i) receive a safe, permanent home as soon as possible; and (ii) thrive in home, school and life.

Mission

Child Advocates engages community volunteers and staff members to protect children who are victims of child abuse. We are their voices in court, ensuring all children thrive in a safe and secure home.

Board Position

Serving as a member of the Child Advocates Board of Directors is a privilege with great responsibility. As a board member, it is your role to support the mission and work of Child Advocates through your leadership. Other aspects of the position require providing strategic vision, fiduciary oversight, resource development and serving as a representative of the organization in the community.

Responsibilities & Expectations

Expectations of the Board of Directors

  • Select and evaluate the performance of the Chief Executive Officer.
  • Participate in strategic and organizational planning.
  • Serve as a trusted advisor to the Chief Executive Officer.
  • Monitor programs by reviewing outcomes and metrics.
  • Ensure strong fiduciary oversight and financial management. Approve the annual budget, 990 filings, year-end audit reports and material business decisions.
  • Assist in creating and maintaining a philanthropic culture and provide strategic assistance with fundraising.
  • Assess its own performance as the governing body.

Expectations of individual board members

  • Understand and follow the mission, values, policies, bylaws,programs, the annual budget and the overall needs of the organization.
  • Represent Child Advocates in the community; acting as an ambassador for the organization.
  • Ensure strict confidentiality in regards to all matters of the organization.
  • View Child Advocates as one of your top three charitable giving priorities and make an annual (at least once every twelve months) personal commitment commensurate with this designation.
  • Identify new prospects and make introductions to Child Advocates.
  • Assist in thanking donors and ensuring good stewardship of the resources provided to Child Advocates.
  • Support and attend all fundraising events.
  • Attend all board meetings. It is expected that each board member be prepared for each board meeting by thoroughly reading and reviewingall material.
  • Serve on at least one board committee.
  • Assist theCEO, board chair and Governance Committee chair in identifying and recruiting new board membersand new committee members.Assist with orientation of new board members.
