Lesson Plan: Candy Math

Connection

-The previous week, I was unable to attend class because of illness and Jaliyah also was unable to attend because of a death in their family. Therefore, because we had been away from each other I wanted to start the activity just getting comfortable with one another again. Also, from previous sessions, I found out her favorite candy was M & M’s. I thought I could use this interest to make an enjoyable lesson for her.

-From previous assessment, I knew Jaliyah had difficulty with two digit numbers. Thus, I created word problems involving two digit addition. As manipulatives I would use bags of M&M’s. I will inform Jaliyah that that each bag has 10 M&M’s in them. Therefore she could use the bags to assist in her grouping, and her addition and subtraction of 2 digit numbers.

-This lesson ties to a previous assessment and interview, I had with Jaliyah. Within her assessment, she struggled with word problems, grouping, and two digit numbers. This activity is based to address those struggles to help her grow and develop mathematically.

Teaching Point

-Not only do I want Jaliyah to grow and devlop in grouping, and two digit addition, I want her to feel more comfortable around me and build a better relationship. I think our conferencing today, is vital for the rest of her growth during my time with her.

-The following standards are addressed in the activity.

2.2.1 / View Resource(s)
Model addition of numbers less than 100 with objects and pictures.
2.2.2 / View Resource(s)
Add two whole numbers less than 100 with and without regrouping.

Active Engagements

Before

-When first seeing Jaliyah, I will strike small conversation to make a more comfortable environment. Questions such as how has your week been? Have you done anything exciting lately? What do you remember from last time we worked together? This will give me not only a sense of where she is conformability, but engagement from previous activities as well.

During

-I will ask Jaliyah to count by 5’s and 10’s for me. This will reassure me her ability to group and count by 10’s and transition to the activity.

-I will bring out the bags of M&M’s. One thing that worries me is she will be more focus and distracted with the M&M’s then the activity. I will open a couple bags for individual pieces and inform her that the bags that are not open have 10 M&Ms in them.

-I will give her a set of problems in which she must use the manipulative to solve them. Throughout her performance of the problems I will ask her questions such as, can you tell me what you did? Or how do we know this is right? I want her to be able to explain and argue her thinking, so that she better understands the mathematical concepts given.

After

-When time is coming to an end I will inform her and ask her if she learned anything today. This question is more for me in helping me with my teaching and practice to determine if she was engaged and how I can improve?

-I will then take out all the bags of M&M’s. I will ask her how many M&M’s total she thinks I have. Then we will count the M&M’s by counting the bags and by 10’s. I think she will enjoy this and it’s a way of emphasizing her grouping.

-Afterwards I will give her one bag of M&M’s as long as she waits until she gets home to eat them.

Link to Ongoing Work

-This activity not only links to the assessment in which I gave her in the past, but her post assessment as well. The purpose of this journey is to see her growth and development mathematically. Her growth will be showcased on these assessments and will directly reflect the lessons I have given.

Reflection

-Overall, I was fairly pleased today. Jaliyah was attentive and engaged and she showcased quality work. Also, I was happy that the M&M’s were beneficial and not a distraction, which was a previous worry of mine.

-In terms of her work, Jaliyah did very well with the addition. She showcased quality work and was able to support it with mathematical argument. However, she struggled much with the subtraction of the problems. Most times she didn’t even realize she was suppose to subtract, which demonstrates her confusion in word problems.

-My next lesson will emphasis on the wording of problems so, that Jaliyah better understands what operations to use. I will also begin an emphasis on subtraction after showcasing her ability to add and her struggles in subtraction.

-Also, want to begin moving Jaliyah away from manipulative. Often times she would begin to mess up because with individual manipulitives she would confuse them all.

-In terms of myself as a teacher, I would like to improve on my clarity of instructions. Often times I would have to repeat or rephrase my instructions. For next lesson, I will think more about word usage and instruction giving.
