YOUR JOB AS TEAM LEADER IS TO GET YOUR TEAM TO DO THINGS THEY MAY NOT WANT TO DO [GO TO THE SCHOOL, COME TO MEETINGS, ETC] SO THAT THEY CAN DO THE THINGS THEY SAID THEY WANTED TO DO [IMPACT THE LIVES OF KIDS].
Leadership: The ability to show the way or guide the course of another by going before and/or going beside.
Don’t forget that your first concern is your own heart and soul. Be faithful in following Jesus so that you may be faithful in caring for the hearts of your team members and your high school friends.
Purpose of a team leader:
- Prayer for the ministry
- Care for, direct, and nurture leaders on your team
- The communication between the staff and your team – This includes communication back to the staff about hopes/needs/misunderstandings
- Share in vision for the future of the area
- Know the high school – Run/ enable the ministry at you school
- Look for adults and parents who could be more involved in YL
- Do “excellence” in ministry (not perfection!)
Prayer and Vision
Pray consistently and lead your team to do the same
Develop prayer strategy/group support ministry (church, campus ministry, etc.)
Dream big – lead the team in imagining what the ministry can become
Develop a plan to move in the direction of your team vision
Gather/Develop Community
Be a friend. Be genuine and vulnerable (Romans 12:9 “Let love be genuine”)
Provide space, time, and leadership for team unity
Be sure to play together as well as work together.
Play AND Coach
Be at the high school twice a week
Help others get to the school twice a week
Always meet team members there OR go together
Shepherd, Nurture, Tend
Be faithful to care for the hearts of your team
Help team find places to grow – church, small groups, mentors
Help team members to have fruitful ministry opportunities
Be to your leaders what you expect them to be to kids
Give positive Feedback when appropriate, write notes, cheer others on in their work
Ask hard questions for accountability
Administration
Serve them by delegating ministry tasks to them instead of doing it all yourself (even it that seems easier!)Organize details of day-to-day ministry
Be sure your team has what they need to do ministry – be a resource for them
Do the little things for your team – Always lead in doing the things no one wants to do
Execute Club – Give things away according to the gifts of your teammates
